However, Consumer Reports only recommends one Kia midsize three-row SUV, the 2022 Kia Telluride.

Firstly, the 2022 Kia Sorento did not earn a Consumer Reports recommendation. Many things went into CR’s determination. For example, the SUV is far more unreliable than its sibling. In the past decade, owners have experienced frequent issues with the engine, transmission, electronics, suspension, brakes, and more. Although it hasn’t been around as long, the Telluride is considered very reliable.

Next, the publication noted that it has a low ride quality with the turbo engine, including a rough-shifting dual-clutch transmission. In addition, take-off is unnaturally hesitant when equipped with the hybrid powertrain. Every Sorento comes with either a 1.6-liter four-cylinder hybrid or a 2.5-liter four, with and without the turbo.

On the other hand, the 2022 Kia Telluride is one of the few recommended midsize three-row SUV models. Not only is it recommended, but it’s one of the highest-rated vehicles overall by CR. Scoring nearly perfectly, there’s a lot to like about the Kia SUV. For example, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and road test scores are immaculate.

Additionally, the publication provides a long list of things it loves about the best overall three-row midsize model. While driving, reviewers noted an excellent ride quality. It is smooth and comfortable, and the interior is quiet from road and engine noise. In addition, its smooth braking is far better than competitors.

Next, the only engine available is a 3.8-liter V6. The only Telluride powertrain is notably excellent, which is why it’s a highlight despite no alternative engine options. Moreover, it provides ample interior space for passengers and cargo. Any family that requires roominess would do well with this Kia midsize three-row offering. Finally, the well-equipped Telluride delivers excellent value.

According to Edmunds, the Telluride starts at $34,725. Even in its most basic form, it has plenty of features and amenities. For example, keyless entry, push-button start, eight-passenger seating, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear-automatic climate control, simulated leather upholstery, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a six-speaker audio system.

Every version of the Telluride has advanced driver aids. Furthermore, this suite of features includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision mitigation, and lane keeping assist.

If you’re deciding between the 2022 Kia Telluride and the 2022 Kia Sorento, CR believes the choice is easy. According to Consumer Reports, the Telluride is the only midsize three-row SUV worth buying from Kia. Moreover, it’s impressive that it received the best overall score in the segment, beating models like the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot.

However, the seasoned Sorento failed to impress the experts. It’s ranked dead last out of every midsize three-row SUV model. Models like the dated Dodge Durango, the unreliable Ford Explorer, and more finished ahead.

For now, Consumer Reports only recommends one Kia midsize three-row SUV. Surprisingly, it’s the newer Kia Telluride, which is getting more and more popular. If you’re in the market for a new Kia SUV, buy the 2022 Kia Telluride, not the Sorento.
