Consumer Reports Ranks the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Above the Subaru Crosstrek

The refreshed Hyundai Tucson isn’t playing around. It’s a serious SUV contender. That’s why it just outranked the Subaru Crosstrek. A lot of work went into scoring the 2022 Hyundai Tucson and the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek, and the Tucson came out on top.

According to Consumer Reports, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson is better than the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek on their list of the best SUVs for under $30,000. They gave each SUV a score of 0 out of 100 based on reliability scores, safety features, ride quality, interior comfort, and more. 

The Hyundai Tucson came in first place with a 93 point score, and Subaru Crosstrek earned a score of 86 points. So, the Tucson and Crosstrek are pretty close in competition. 

Consumer Reports ranks the Hyundai Tucson highly for having a smooth gas-powered engine and efficient hybrid setup. The ride is a bit firm but feels confident with responsive handling. Plus, it has a quiet cabin, spacious interior, tons of cargo space, and tons of standard safety features.

The Subaru Crosstrek ranks highly for having a comfortable ride with responsive handling, a pretty good fuel economy, excellent visibility, intuitive tech, spacious cabin, and a good amount of standard features. But the acceleration is a little sluggish, and the interior could be quieter. 

Does the Tucson perform better than the Crosstrek? 

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is equipped with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 187 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. You can upgrade to the 1.6-liter turbocharged hybrid engine for 226 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The Hyundai Tucson Hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.1 seconds. 

With the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek, you get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder standard engine with 152 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. The more powerful option is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. It can reach 60 mph in about 8.4 seconds

The Subaru Crosstrek comes with standard all-wheel drive and has a higher ground clearance than the Hyundai Tucson. You can pair the Tucson with AWD, and both SUVs are capable of handling slippery conditions. However, the Crosstrek can go further off the beaten track. 

When properly equipped, the Tucson can tow up to 2,000 lbs, and the Crosstrek can tow up to 1,500 lbs. Both can tow small campers, flatbeds, and bicycle trailers.

You can get started in a 2022 Subaru Crosstrek for about $22,445. The 2022 Hyundai Tucson costs a little more, with a starting price of around $24,950. 

You can access 38.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats of the Tucson with up to 80.3 cubes total. The Crosstrek provides 20.8 cubic feet behind the second room with up to 55.3 cubic feet of cargo space total. 

Tons of high-quality materials and luxury features create a comfortable and inviting interior. The Crosstrek’s interior is considered to be durable and basic. It provides function over form. 

A 6.5-inch infotainment system is standard in the Subaru Crosstrek, but you can upgrade to an 8.0-inch unit. The Hyundai Tucson comes with a 10.3-inch screen. Both come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

Standard features for the Tucson consist of automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assistance. These are available with the Crosstek. 

So, the Hyundai Tucson seems to include more value than the Subaru Crosstrek and also may serve as a more comfortable daily driver. However, the Crosstrek is the better off-roader.
