Consumer Reports Picked the 2022 Ford Ranger Over the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz

Compact trucks are all the rage this season, which includes the small pickup truck segment. Consumer Reports ranked all of the options on the market right now, including the 2022 Ford Ranger and the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz. What strengths do both of these trucks bring to the table for buyers who need a vehicle that does it all?

Consumer Reports reccomends the 2022 Ford Ranger

It isn’t too often a new Ranger appears. In Consumer Reports recent rankings of compact pickup trucks, the 2022 Ford Ranger impressed the experts. However, the Ford Ranger isn’t exactly new to the market. This compact pickup truck has been around since 2000, though it took a break from 2011 until 2019.

The Ranger received the coveted “recommended” label from Consumer Reports. It came in second on the list of compact pickup trucks and received a score of 62 overall. On the road test, the 2022 Ranger scored a 55 out of 100 overall. The predicted owner satisfaction was a three out of five, which is pretty average for a pickup truck. The predicted reliability was a bit higher at a four out of five.

One of the more important segments is the area of safety. The 2022 Ford Ranger has forward collision warning (FCW), automatic emergency braking (AEB), and pedestrian detection. Things like lane departure warning (LDW) and lane-keeping assist (LKA) are available, but not included.

While the Ranger has been around for a long time, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is brand new. For a first-time scoring from Consumer Reports, a 59 overall isn’t bad. That’s only three points below the Ranger that has almost 20 years of experience on it. It came in third on the list of compact pickup trucks.

Consumer Reports gave the 2022 Santa Cruz a score of 77 out of 100 on the road test, which is a great score. The predicted owner satisfaction, the Santa Cruz scored a four out of five. The predicted reliability was a bit lower with a two out of five.

When it comes to safety, the Santa Cruz is set up for success. FCW, AEB, LKA, and LDW are standard. Blind spot warning is optional. The first year of this truck missed out on the “recommended” label, but there’s always next year.

What about the IIHS and the NHTSA safety ratings for these compact pickup trucks?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2022 Ford Ranger ratings of good and acceptable for the various crash results. From the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the scores were mostly five-stars with some four and three-star ratings sprinkled in between.

Since the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is so new, it doesn’t have as many crash ratings yet. The IIHS ranked all of the completed tests “good,” which is a good start. The NHTSA has not completed testing on the compact pickup truck yet.

Both the 2022 Ford Ranger and the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz have a lot to offer buyers. Those looking for a brand-new truck will appreciate everything the Santa Cruz brings to the table. For those looking for a tried and true truck, the Ranger checks all of those boxes.
