According to Consumer Reports, two Ford SUVs have won the best American SUV in its class award, and Chevy pulled in one as well.
What is the ‘Best American SUV in Its Class’ award?
Many people want to buy American. It’s a way to show civic pride, support American workers, and for many, it’s simply a way of life. That’s why Consumer Reports gets so many questions about how to pick the best American vehicle in that particular segment.
The list is comprised of vehicles from American automakers. This doesn’t mean that these vehicles are built in America, however. In fact, there are some foreign automakers like Kia who have plants here in America, so before deciding that you’re going to ‘buy American,’ keep in mind that this label is not as straightforward as it would seem.
It’s also important to note that the vehicles on this list are not necessarily the best overall. These vehicles are simply the best produced under an American automaker name.
The Ford Edge had the edge over other midsize SUVs
The Ford Edge has an overall score of 83, which is actually pretty good. It’s a jack of all trades that meets the needs of all consumers, no matter what they’ll need.
The Ford Edge comes equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 250 hp. This allows it to get both speed and towing ability. It also comes at the cost of fuel economy.
The Ford Edge only gets an estimated 21 mph in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, which isn’t bad, but many competitors get better.
The starting price of around $31,000 isn’t that great considering many compact SUVs start around $22,000. It’s still got a lot to offer, however, and for anyone looking for a family vehicle, the Ford Edge is definitely a great option.
The Ford Expedition proves America loves big things
The Ford Expedition has an overall score of 69 out of 100. While that sounds bad, it’s actually the number one vehicle in the large sport-utility vehicle division. That includes both American and foreign automakers.
There are a lot of features that help the Ford Expedition stand out, like the optional retractable running boards that make getting in and out less of a hassle. For anyone who struggles getting into tall vehicles, this is a great option to have.
The Ford Expedition is also comfortable enough, no matter where you get stuck sitting. It comes with three rows, making it a great family vehicle. It’s also great for road trips with friends.
For anyone who craves safety tech, Ford offers plenty of that on the Expedition. It comes equipped with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic warning.
Given all that it offers, the Ford Expedition is definitely worth it’s price of $49,995 – $78,825. While there might be cheaper SUVs out there, the Expedition has everything a driver could want.
The Chevy Equinox beat out Ford’s compact SUV
RELATED: How Reliable is the Chevy Equinox?
Ford didn’t take home all the awards for SUVs. The Chevy Equinox managed to take the award for compact SUVs.
It’s far from the best of the best, however. It comes in at number six out of 17 vehicles ranked by Consumer Reports, which means that there are five vehicles that are better. Furthermore, it has an overall score of 74 out of 100.
While it’s got some high tech features that are sure to draw in some consumers, it’s poor fuel economy and poor performance don’t do it any favors.
If you’re looking for the best American compact SUV, then the Chevy Equinox is your best pick. On the other hand, if you’re looking for the best overall compact SUV, the 2021 Subaru Forester topped the charts.
