Consumer Reports Doesn’t Like This Old-School, Full-Size Truck

As pickup trucks become more and more luxurious and expensive, finding a down-to-earth full-size truck may feel like a difficult task. But according to Consumer Reports, Ram is selling just that. Despite receiving a redesign in 2019, Ram is still selling the prior generation of the Ram 1500 which is now known as the Ram 1500 Classic. While Consumer Reports does find plenty to praise about this truck, there are a few complaints and the truck is scored relatively low.

Is Ram still making the 1500 Classic?

In 2022, Ram is still producing the 1500 Classic. It is based on the previous generation of the Ram 1500, giving it a slightly more old-school feel than the current generation. This truck offers a variety of powertrain options, and it has a starting MSRP of $29,515, which helps with affordability.

The 2022 Ram 1500 Classic is available in three unique trim levels, including the Warlock trim. The Warlock trim on the Ram 1500 adds distinctive black accents as well as powder-coated bumpers. This model can also come equipped with four-wheel drive, which will increase its overall capability.

What doesn’t Consumer Reports not like about the Ram 1500 Classic?

Consumer Reports has a few complaints about the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic, these include a lack of a dampened tailgate and difficulty getting into the cabin, especially for shorter drivers. Additionally, if it weren’t for the presence of a mandated backup camera, rear visibility is not the best. Even with this truck’s commanding stature.

Unlike other new full-size pickup trucks, the Ram 1500 Classic lacks things like steps or a ladder to get into the rear cargo bed. While this is not a dealbreaker, the 1500 Classic is not necessarily a cheap truck. So, some of these features would be nice.

Why is Ram still selling the Classic?

When Ram released the fifth generation of the Ram 1500 in 2019, the brand still wanted to sell an affordable alternative, which is where the 1500 Classic comes in. It is a way to buy a new truck that is not as expensive as the normal 2022 Ram 1500.

With the 2022 1500 Classic, according to Consumer Reports, buyers can benefit from two different engine options. These include the workhorse 3.6-liter V6 engine or the powerful 5.7-liter V8. When equipped with the V8, the Ram 1500 Classic can produce 395 horsepower and 410 pound-foot of torque. And those are fairly impressive numbers.

Is the 2022 Ram Classic worth it?

Prices of new trucks have only gotten higher, so the fact that Ram is still selling a new truck with some value proposition does make the Ram 1500 Classic worthy of consideration. While the truck may feel dated when compared to other 2022 models, it is still a competent full-size truck.

If you are shopping for a new truck, and want something a little bit more old-school, the Ram 1500 Classic does a decent job. But it is worth noting that Consumer Reports does not rank this model as high as other new trucks.
