Consumer Reports Doesn’t Recommend These 5 New Small Cars

When shoppers are looking for a new small sedan in 2022 there are plenty of models to choose from. Because of the large selection, finding exactly what you want and need can actually be quite a process. Whether you are looking for a spacious interior or something with a bit of performance, there are many models to consider. If you are unsure of what you should be looking for, and happen to look at these 5 new cars, maybe consider shopping for something else.

1. Mitsubishi Mirage

The new 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage is a relatively infamous car because of its compact size and puny powertrain. While it can offer drivers some remarkable efficiency, the new Mitsubishi falls short in most areas. It is among the lowest-powered new cars available and is certainly not too fun to drive. Plus, the build quality, handling, and features leave a lot to be desired.

2. Kia Forte

On paper, the new 2022 Kia Forte is a well-equipped and advanced compact car. It offers a ton of great technology and in many ways looks like it can surpass the competition with ease. But, when you get into the nitty-gritty, it’s clear that there are better choices around. Consumer Reports notes that the Kia Forte’s suspension does it no favors when it comes to comfort, which makes this sedan quite lackluster.

3. Chevrolet Spark

The new 2022 Chevrolet Spark may be one of the smallest cars on the road. This tiny compact car can easily handle busy streets and parking lots, but there are few other areas where the Chevrolet Spark stands out. For example, the interior is rather pedestrian and any bump in the road causes rattles. Furthermore, the Chevrolet Spark is not exciting to drive, getting you to 60 mph in a paltry 12 seconds.

4. Kia Rio

Kia occupies two spots on this list, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. The new 2022 Kia Rio is one of the better options, but it still is not the smartest choice. The 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is a decently peppy engine for the class, but the suspension can be less than ideal on a bumpy road. Finally, the efficiency of this engine is fine, but at 32 mpg combined in the CR testing, there are larger models that have the same efficiency.

5. Toyota Corolla Hatchback

Rounding out the list of small cars is a surprising one, the Toyota Corolla Hatchback. The new 2022 Toyota Corolla Hatchback brings drivers a stylish and complete design that certainly stands out. More importantly, the engine provides plenty of peppiness and smooth power delivery. Despite that good, the Toyota Corolla Hatchback does have some weaknesses, such as its ability to handle unruly roads, some lackluster build quality, and less-than-ideal visibility inside.

Consider a different small car

Shopping for a small car can certainly be a process as you dig into the available models and determine which model is ideal for your needs. These 5 models are less than ideal for most drivers. Instead of one of these models, consider something else, maybe a model that has been recommended by Consumer Reports.
