Consumer Reports Doesn’t Recommend 1 Minivan

Consumer Reports recommends every minivan it’s reviewed except for one. Despite being one of the most popular offerings, the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica fell behind rivals. Out of five reviewed minivans, the Pacifica is the only one Consumer Reports doesn’t recommend. What makes the Chrysler minivan the worst option in its class?

Consumer Reports thoroughly reviews hundreds of vehicles every year. However, the minivan segment has shrunk to only a few models. With such a low number of remaining options, it’s surprising that most are excellent. Additionally, there isn’t much of a difference between the best models. Only a single point separates the top four models in CR’s rankings. At the top is a three-way tie between the 2023 Honda Odyssey, 2022 Kia Carnival, and 2022 Toyota Sienna.

Each of these models excels in different ways. For example, the Toyota Sienna has a perfect owner satisfaction rating, and the Kia Carnival‘s road test went swimmingly. Outside the top four models, only the Chrysler Pacifica failed to earn the coveted “recommended” label from CR. So what’s wrong with Chrysler’s minivan?

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica received a lower score than every other reviewed minivan. So much lower that it isn’t recommended by the publication. To earn a recommendation, models need to score high enough overall. CR judges vehicles based on a road test, predicted owner satisfaction, predicted reliability, and much more. What made the Pacifica fall so far behind other minivans?

Firstly, the Pacifica scored the lowest possible number for predicted reliability. Based on previous model years, the Chrysler minivan isn’t as reliable as other options. No one wants to deal with frequent mechanical problems that aren’t considered routine maintenance.

Next, CR says the engine isn’t as refined as competitors. On top of that, one of its most outstanding features, Stow ‘n Go, is lost with the hybrid powertrain. As a result, standard versions of the Pacifica don’t get great gas mileage. Excellent fuel economy is vital in 2022, and other models are a little better.

Other than a few things, the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica is still an excellent minivan. It didn’t earn CR’s recommendation because of past reliability and other problems. However, CR’s list of positives about the model is far longer than the negatives. Additionally, it earned a very high road-test score, indicating how well it drives and performs overall.

Consumer Reports listed the interior, Stow ‘n Go seats, hybrid fuel economy, infotainment, and AWD as positives. Each of these items is important for most minivan or SUV owners. With such a high-quality interior and one of the best infotainment systems available (UConnect), it’s a shame the minivan falters elsewhere. In addition, Stow ‘n Go seats are a fantastic feature and a real selling point, so it’s horrible that the feature is lost with the hybrid powertrain. Especially considering how improved fuel economy is with the hybrid instead of the standard engine.

How much is the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica?

Lastly, the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica is more expensive than every 2022 minivan. Furthermore, it starts at $37,095, and the decked-out highest trim level costs $58,050. In comparison, the top-ranked minivan of 2022, the Kia Carnival, is $32,300, and its range-topping trim starts at $46,300. As a result, the Pacifica likely loses a lot of interested customers due to being far more expensive than better-reviewed rivals.

According to experts at Consumer Reports, you should avoid buying the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica. In such a small segment, deciding which model is best for you can be challenging. However, it’s easy to eliminate the Pacifica as an option since it’s the only minivan not recommended by Consumer Reports. Besides its high price, the Pacifica also suffers from poor predicted reliability, an unrefined engine, poor fuel economy, and the loss of excellent features with the hybrid powertrain.
