Consumer Reports Does Not Recommend the 2022 Kia Soul

The Kia Soul is best known for its boxy, funky exterior design and spacious interior. It’s technically considered a small SUV, so it will certainly turn heads no matter where you go. Unfortunately, the 2022 Kia Soul is not recommended by Consumer Reports. In fact, in the compact SUV segment, it received one of the lowest scores possible. Let’s see how the Soul compares to some of its competitors: the Jeep Renegade, Toyota C-HR, and the Nissan Kicks.

Will there be a 2022 Kia Soul?

Yes, there will be a 2022 Kia Soul. Here’s what we do know about the new Soul, too. First, it comfortably seats five and is equipped with front-wheel drive. Additionally, because of its compact size, this SUV is an excellent option for driving around the city.

This small SUV offers a choice of engine options: a 147-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a continuously variable automatic transmission and an available 201-horsepower, turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder, depending on your driving goals. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard features, which allow you to stay connected while you’re on the go.

However, as much as the 2022 Kia Soul has to offer, it is not recommended by Consumer Reports. The organization gave it low scores in several areas, including predicted reliability and predicted owner satisfaction. CR did, however, give it a slightly higher score on its road tests. The good news is that there are several other options in the segment. Let’s see how they compare:

2022 Kia Soul vs. 2022 Nissan Kicks

Another popular small SUV is the 2022 Nissan Kicks. It’s been a fan favorite for a while and is recommended by Consumer Reports. Although it didn’t score as high as the Soul in the road test, it has a better-predicted reliability score.

The Kicks features a 7-inch touchscreen and a surround-view camera. Add on the SR upgrade package and you’ll have synthetic leather, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a security system – some of these features aren’t available with the Kia Soul.

2022 Kia Soul vs. 2022 Toyota C-HR

The 2022 C-HR is one of the newest members of the Toyota lineup. It has strong style features from the inside out, and since it’s a Toyota, a stronger resale value.

Unfortunately, this small SUV isn’t recommended by Consumer Reports either. It did score higher in predicted reliability, though. The Kia Soul also has the option of a turbo engine, whereas the C-HR does not. The only engine available for the CH-R is the 144-horsepower 2.0-liter I4.

2022 Kia Soul vs. 2022 Jeep Renegade

The 2022 Kia Soul and Jeep Renegade both feature that familiar boxy style. If you need a better off-roading option, the Jeep Renegade is able to take on more. It comes equipped with a six-cylinder engine and can tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped. The Renegade falls behind with mpg, receiving 24 city/32 highway.

That said, based on Consumer Reports’ ratings, the Jeep Renegade SUV received low scores in several areas, so vehicles like the Nissan Kicks or Toyota C-HR are likely better options than the Kia Soul.

What should you buy instead of a new Kia Soul?

Small crossover SUVs are a popular option, especially for first-time drivers looking to save money at the gas pump. The 2022 Nissan Kicks did get a good score from Consumer Reports, making it the recommended option by us. Other compact SUVs, like the Jeep Renegade and Toyota C-HR, may be better depending on what you’re looking for in your next vehicle. Just be sure to test drive your favorite options at your local dealership.
