Consumer Reports‘ best midsize SUV overall is the 2022 Subaru Outback. In the crowded segment, CR only recommends a few different models. However, the Outback is the best of the best, beating popular models like the Toyota Venza, Chevy Blazer, and Nissan Murano. CR’s road test made it fall in love with the Outback, giving it nearly the best possible score.

The publication loves the Subaru Outback’s smooth ride, comfortable seats, perfect driving position, and excellent visibility. Additionally, the Outback is predicted to be reliable and satisfy owners, based on previous model years. Lastly, CR loves that the Subaru SUV gets outstanding fuel economy, with 16 city and 32 highway mpg.

Models like the Nissan Murano, Chevy Blazer, and Honda Passport sit atop the list. However, Consumer Reports’ favorite midsize SUV is ranked seventh, or dead last, in J.D. Power’s rankings.

However, JDP didn’t give the Outback a particularly low score overall. It’s only nine points short of the first-place Murano, but why is it so far behind? JDP says owners don’t like the Outback’s user experience with navigation, the engine’s sound, or the user experience setting up features. Additionally, it gave the Subaru midsize model a 71/100 for quality and reliability, which is more critical than CR.
