Consumer Reports Best Compact Pickup Truck Is Also the Most Expensive

Sometimes, the best things in life are also some of the most expensive. People will have to pay more for a better product. That’s also true in the compact pickup truck segment, as the best truck is the most expensive one. Here’s a look at the 2022 Honda Ridgeline and why it’s the most expensive and best compact pickup truck on the market right now.

The 2022 Ford Maverick is the cheapest

According to Consumer Reports, the cheapest compact pickup option on the market right now is the Ford Maverick. The Maverick starts at just under $20,000, making it more affordable than many sedans, never mind other trucks. In fact, the Maverick is significantly cheaper than the next cheapest truck, which is the Hyundai Santa Cruz. That Hyundai costs about $4,500 more than the little Ford does.

Despite its cheap price tag, the Maverick is an excellent truck Consumer Reports recommends. It’s the second-best compact pickup truck in the segment, right behind the Honda Ridgeline. One of the reasons the Maverick is such a good truck is because of how it drives. It’s maneuverable, its ride quality is good, and drivers will also get good visibility from their seats.

However, as good as the Maverick is, the Ridgeline is still the best truck in the segment. The Ridgeline won’t be cheap, though. It starts at just over $38,000. Compared to the Maverick, truck shoppers may have to pay twice the price tag of the Maverick just to get their hands on the Ridgeline. But, if they do that, then Honda will make it worth their while.

Consumer Reports liked the Ridgeline for many reasons, and one of the main ones is how comfortable it is. Unlike most trucks, the Ridgeline has a unibody construction, making it feel more like a sedan than a truck. It has a comfortable ride quality, a well-finished cabin, and good fuel economy.

While the Honda truck is as comfortable as a sedan, it’s also a capable truck. The 3.5-liter V6 engine gets 280 hp, allowing the Ridgeline to tow about 5,000 pounds. According to Consumer Reports, its truck bed is also durable composite material. It’ll have innovative features, such as a dual-action tailgate or an in-bed trunk.

The 2022 Jeep Gladiator is the worst compact pickup truck you can buy

On the other hand, Consumer Reports wrote that the worst compact pickup truck would also be expensive. The Jeep Gladiator is the second most expensive compact truck on the market, as it starts at about $36,000. But unlike the Ridgeline, the Jeep Gladiator is probably not worth the high price tag.

Consumer Reports did not have many good things to say about the Gladiator, as it simply did not perform well on its road test. Consumer Reports concluded that it did not handle well, it’s hard to get into and out of, and there can be a lot of wind noise inside the cabin. On top of that, the Gladiator has a poor reliability history, especially in its debut model year. According to Consumer Reports, Jeep has fixed some issues since then, but its reliability is still suspect.
