Gas prices have soared in recent months, leaving many drivers feeling the pinch at the pump. As a result, many Americans are thinking about their cars’ gas mileage. So recently, Consumer Reports created a list of vehicles that cost the most to fuel up. Here’s why the 2022 Ford Expedition costs more to refill than any other new SUV.
Why the 2022 Ford Expedition is the most expensive SUV to gas up
As of April 11, the average U.S. gas price is $4.11 per gallon. Consumer Reports took the national average and multiplied it by the gas tank size of some of the largest new passenger vehicles.
After crunching the numbers, CR found the 2022 Ford Expedition is the most expensive SUV to gas up. Thanks to its 28.3-gallon gas tank, it costs an average of $116 to a refull. But its large gas tank has some benefits.
Although the Ford Expedition gets terrible fuel economy — 16 mpg overall — its large gas tank means the Expedition can travel 453 miles on a full tank. That’s is a better range than competitors.
That said, it was a close race. The Chevy Suburban also has a huge gas tank, but at 28 gallons, it’s slightly smaller than the Expedition’s. It also means the Suburban ranks second, costing $115 on average to gas up. The Suburban gets only 15 mpg overall, so its range is slightly lower at 448 miles.
An overview of the 2022 Ford Expedition
Though the 2022 Ford Expedition is the most expensive SUV to fill up right now, it’s by no means a bad vehicle. In fact, the 2022 model scored an overall 73 out of 100 from Consumer Reports and tops CR’s list of full-size SUVs. The main reason why the Expedition scored well is that it’s consistent across most categories.
Thanks to the Expedition’s generous dimensions, this 18.5-foot long, three-row SUV is spacious. It can tow 9,300 pounds and has plenty of cargo capacity, headroom, and legroom.
On top of that, Ford gave the 2022 model some powerful V6 engines, allowing the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds. Unsurprisingly, Consumer Reports gave the 2022 Expedition a 73 out of 100 on its road test.
This large SUV might be worth the high cost to gas up
In addition to scoring well overall and on CR’s road tests, the 2022 Ford Expedition earned decent predicted reliability and predicted owner satisfaction ratings.
It scored a 3 out of 5 in predicted reliability and 4 out of 5 in predicted owner satisfaction. And for $51,000, the Expedition is well-equipped. A 12-inch touchscreen comes standard, as do several advanced safety features.
The 2022 model also boasts dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, and heated rear seats.
Thanks to all of those standard features, Vincentric named the Expedition the best-value large SUV of 2022. Not too shabby for a vehicle that costs over $100 to refuel.
