Consumer Reports’ favorite full-size pickup truck of 2022 is the Ram 1500. If you’re in the market for a new truck, there’s a good chance this one is on your list of options. However, like all things, even the best truck isn’t perfect. Consumer Reports has one issue with the 2022 Ram 1500.

Consumer Reports’ only issue is high step-in

As one of the most trusted reviewers of everything, Consumer Reports thoroughly tests all its vehicles to find the best of the best. For the Ram 1500, there’s a lot to like. It didn’t become one of the most popular trucks globally by accident. For 2022, it even received better overall reviews than the best-selling Ford F-150. Outranking the F-150 in anything is an accomplishment all its own.

In each CR review, the publication notes the highs and lows of the vehicle. For the 2022 Ram 1500, there’s only a single low. High step-in is the only problem the reviewer had with the Ram pickup. Interestingly enough, CR has the same issue with nearly every full-size truck. Are full-size trucks like the Ram 1500 too high, or is Consumer Reports nitpicking?

Is a high step-in really a problem with the Ram 1500?

Climbing into the front and rear seats of a Ram 1500 isn’t as easy as a sedan or SUV. Luckily, running boards are available for just about every pickup on the market. With running boards installed, people of any size can climb into a truck with relative ease. Do you consider a high step-in to be a real complaint worth making?

We don’t think it’s a valid complaint, especially when it’s true for every model. Don’t believe us? Of the top five full-size pickup trucks, only one doesn’t have step height as a “low” listed on CR’s review. The 2022 Ram 1500, Ford F-150, Ford F-250, and Chevy Silverado are too high to step into comfortably. On the other hand, only the Nissan Titan didn’t receive the same negative feedback.

Ram 1500 problems

You’d be hard-pressed to find many issues with the Ram 1500. Most of its problems are the same ones other options in its class suffer from. For example, fuel economy could be better, but it’s a large truck, so that’s a difficult task. With the upcoming Ram electric truck, that problem is solved. For now, the pickup gets just 11 city and 24 highway mpg for a combined 17 mpg. That’s better than every other full-size model besides, you guessed it, the Ford F-150.

There aren’t many other specific significant flaws with Consumer Reports’ best overall truck. Most notably is the low predicted reliability score. Furthermore, a 3 out of 5 isn’t terrible; however, it is worth mentioning. Historically, Ram 1500 owners have experienced plenty of engine, transmission, fuel system, and other issues. Thankfully, recent years are a significant improvement, though they haven’t been around long enough to experience much.

If you’re in the market for a new full-size pickup, CR recommends the 2022 Ram 1500 above every other model. There’s only one issue listed as a real problem for the popular truck. We think if you can get past fuel economy and a low-reliability rating, the Ram 1500 is an excellent option. Consumer Reports has one issue with the 2022 Ram 1500, and it’s not a big deal.
