There’s really no getting around it. The Chevy Tahoe and the GMC Yukon are very similar. However, that shouldn’t be all that surprising. After all, both Chevy and GMC fall under the General Motors umbrella. But are the Chevy Tahoe the GMC Yukon exactly the same? As it turns out, while these SUVs might be similar, there are a few key differences between them.

Is the Chevy Tahoe the same SUV as the GMC Yukon?

The Chevy Tahoe and the GMC Yukon aren’t the same SUV, but it is pretty close. In fact, pop the hood on either of these SUVs, and you’ll find that both come standard with a 355-hp 5.3-liter V8 under the hood. Both SUVs are also available with a 420-hp 6.2-liter V8 and a 277-hp turbo-diesel 3.0-liter inline-six. But regardless of which engine is under the hood, you can expect both SUVs to also come standard with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

According to Car and Driver, the Chevy Tahoe and the GMC Yukon share a similar look too. Set your sights on both SUVs, Car and Driver says, and you’ll quickly notice that both the Tahoe and the Yukon share identical side and top-down views.

The similarities don’t end there, either. Car and Driver reports that both the Tahoe and the GMC Yukon share the same screen setup, climate control panel, and driver’s gauge cluster. Features like optional air suspensions, 15-inch head-up displays, active grille shutters, and a long list of safety and driver-assist features are also available whether you choose the Chevy Tahoe or the Yukon.

There are differences between the Chevy Tahoe and the GMC Yukon

As similar as the Chevy Tahoe and the GMC Yukon may be, there a few key differences between the two. According to Car and Driver, one of those differences includes the GMC Yukon’s Active Response 4WD system. This system is exclusive to the Yukon and intuitively manages “traction and power distribution based on the driving scenario,” Car and Driver reports.

There are some differences between exterior styling too. While the Chevy Tahoe’s grille is wider than that of the Yukon’s, it’s the GMC Yukon that boasts wider headlights. Both SUVs have very different taillights and liftgates too. So much so that you’d be hard-pressed to say that these SUVs are nearly the same.

Perhaps the biggest difference between these two SUVs is the range-topping Yukon Denali, which adds a slew of premium materials throughout the SUV’s interior. According to Car and Driver, the Yukon Denali’s infotainment “screen sits lower on the dash and has two large HVAC vents above it” too.

The Chevy Tahoe is an affordable alternative to the GMC Yukon

Here’s the thing, while the GMC Yukon and the Tahoe are extremely similar, one is cheaper than the other. In fact, when it comes down to it, the Tahoe makes for an affordable alternative to this year’s Yukon. While the Yukon boasts a base price of $51,000, the Chevy Tahoe will only have you spending $49,000 on a base model. Considering how similar these two vehicles are, that’s a significant price difference.

Which SUV is right for you?

As similar as this year’s Tahoe and the GMC Yukon may be, chances are you’re going to like one more than the other. So before making any final buying decisions? We recommend taking both of these options out for a test drive.
