General Motors knows where its bread is buttered when it comes to the big SUV lineup by Chevrolet. More Chevy Suburban and Tahoes roll off dealer lots in Texas than in any other state. In tribute to this receptive market, Chevy introduced Texas Editions of its two SUVs the same day the automaker brought Z71 editions of both the Suburban and Tahoe to the Texas State Fair. All four models will be available this fall.
Available in LT and LTZ trims for the Suburban and Tahoe, the Texas Editions offer up a max trailer package along with 22-inch polished aluminun wheels, navigation radio and nine months of Sirius XM radio. Chevy’s marketing team brought hyperbolic notes worthy of their subjects in announcing the slick SUVs.
“Texas is Chevy truck country and the new Tahoe and Suburban Texas Editions celebrate that passion like Friday night football,” said Sandor Piszar, director of Chevrolet Marketing, before calling the big trucks “part of the very fabric of Texas life.” Built in Arlington since 2000, Texas Chevy dealers can celebrate the fruits of local returns. Sales of the SUVs are up 37 percent in Texas through August 2014 compared to the year before.
Earlier in the year, the Chevy Silverado got itself a Texas Edition in the pickup’s biggest market. Mix in a University of Texas Edition of the Silverado and you have Chevy’s all-out blitz on the Lone Star State. Similar notes are hit in the new Z71 line for Tahoe and Suburban models.
The Suburban and Tahoe Z71 Editions focus on off-road performance in the SUVs. A front skid plate, off-road tires, a special grille and badging, fog lamps, and front tow hooks come standard in Z71 models.
In addition to the exterior and utility upgrades, Z71 models have OnStar 4G LTE with wireless phone charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot built into the panel controls. A hands-free liftgate makes that part of the equation easier and enhances the luxury air of the Z71 SUVs. These packages go on sale with the trucks later in the fall.
Because of emissions standards and other concerns, don’t expect these models to turn up in California any time soon unless they have Texas plates. The market for large, luxury SUVs is alive and well in the Lone Star State, and Chevy is doing what politicans call “playing to the base.”
