The Chevy Silverado EV is the electric underdog in the looming electric pickup truck war

Chances are you haven’t seen an electric pickup truck quietly roll down your street recently, but that will change very soon. General Motors and Ford are going all-in on electric. The Blue Oval announced that the Ford F-150, the quintessential American work truck was getting electrified back in 2021. Ram revealed that it would be electrifying its full-size truck model as well.

The folks at Chevrolet knew they needed an electric truck to compete in the innovative new segment. Enter the Chevy Silverado EV. The Silverado may have played second fiddle to other full-size trucks in recent years, but Chevrolet is playing to win with the Silverado EV. Never underestimate the underdog.

The Chevy Silverado could shockingly defeat the Ford F-150 Lightning because of just one spec. The spec is arguably the most important in the EV space. Chevrolet’s full-size electric truck could beat out the Ford F-150 Lightning for the top spot because it will have superior range.

According to Car and Driver, the Chevy Silverado EV will have a 400-mile range. Here’s what that range means for the electric full-size pickup truck and its competition.

Range anxiety is a term coined for the emerging electric vehicle industry. The term was created to describe the emotion drivers feel when they find that a vehicle’s range is too short to be practical. Some gas-powered vehicles have driving ranges above 500 miles before needing to be refueled.

Hybrid vehicles can have driving ranges above 700 miles. Electric vehicles are so new to the market that automakers are just scratching the surface of lithium-ion battery potential. The Chevy Silverado EV proves that electric vehicles are rapidly becoming more practical. The average popular electric vehicle on the market today gets closer to 250 miles of range.

Should you buy a 2024 Chevy Silverado EV?

The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV is a no-brainer for consumers looking for a full-size electric pickup truck that relieves range anxiety. The Silverado EV is expected to start at around $40,000 but the truck will be eligible for federal electric vehicle tax incentives. There is currently no range estimate available for the base model Silverado EV.
