I have good news for those who love beefy V8 engines. As other brands turn to V6 turbos, Chevrolet trucks have other plans. It’s updating its lineup to include more efficient V8 options to meet rising emission standards.

Chevrolet trucks are keeping V8 engines

The current Toyota Tundra doesn’t have a V8 engine, the Ram 1500 dropped its V8 options, and the Ford F-150 is down to one V8 option for the Raptor R.

As a truck fan, I’ve watched many V8 engines and diesel options get the axe. But Chevrolet trucks are taking a different approach.

Chevy has decided not to focus solely on going hybrid or fully electric. Instead, the next generation of trucks will have improved versions of its current lineup.

Currently, the 5.3-liter V8 engine provides 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. The 6.2-liter V8 engine cranks out 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.

The updated engines will offer a 6% fuel economy improvement to help with rising gas prices. According to Edmunds, the current V8s get about 17 mpg. So, only expect a slight improvement that adds up over time.

It’s unclear if Chevrolet trucks will have upgraded diesel engines as well. They have only shared clues about the small block engines so far. However, the next generation of the Chevy Silverado 1500 launches in 2027, so it’s safe to expect more clues soon.

The current model offers a standard turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine with 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. Drivers can also opt for the turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine with 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque.
