BMW produces a superb collection of luxury cars and SUVs — with world-class performance, pleasing driving dynamics, stylish designs, and premium features. However, most BMWs are not affordable for the vast majority of car shoppers. There is an exception, though: the 2023 BMW X2 subcompact luxury SUV, which is the cheapest new BMW car. On top of that, the X2 is one of the best small luxury SUVs — and loved by automotive experts.

With a starting price of $36,600 MSRP, the 2023 BMW X2 is the cheapest new BMW car available in the United States. The X2 is one of the few luxury cars in the BMW lineup that’s financially accessible. Following the X2, the next most affordable new BMW models are the 2023 2 Series luxury coupe ($37,800 MSRP) and the 2023 X1 subcompact luxury SUV ($38,600 MSRP).

Here are the 10 cheapest new BMW models:

  1. 2023 BMW X2: $36,600 MSRP
  2. 2023 BMW 2 Series: $37,800 MSRP
  3. 2023 BMW X1: $38,600 MSRP
  4. 2023 BMW 3 Series: $42,300 MSRP
  5. 2023 BMW X3: $45,400 MSRP
  6. 2023 BMW 4 Series: $45,900 MSRP
  7. 2023 BMW i4: $51,400 MSRP
  8. 2023 BMW Z4: $52,800 MSRP
  9. 2023 BMW X4: $54,200 MSRP
  10. 2023 BMW 5 Series: $54,800 MSRP

Part of the reason why the 2023 BMW X2 is so affordable is that a redesigned next-generation X2 is in the works. The 2023 X2 is mechanically similar to the previous-generation 2022 X1. The X1 was redesigned for the 2023 model year, while the next-generation X2 will arrive for the 2024 model year.

In 2022, the X1 was the cheapest new BMW car. However, with its redesign, the 2023 X1 had a $3,200 price increase, while the starting price is unchanged for the 2023 X2. As a result, the X2 is now the most affordable BMW model.

Automotive experts rate the BMW X2 very highly

Along with being the cheapest new BMW car, the 2023 BMW X2 is one of the best small luxury SUVs. Automotive experts, such as Car and Driver and U.S. News & World Report, rate it very highly.

Both publications rank the BMW X2 as the third-best subcompact luxury SUV. Car and Driver and U.S. News have it ahead of many other models in the small luxury SUV segment, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class, Audi Q3, Cadillac XT4, Jaguar E-PACE, Lexus UX, and Land Rover Range Evoque. Only the BMW X1 and the Volvo XC40 rank higher.

In its evaluation of the 2023 X2, Car and Driver highlighted its “cool exterior styling, sweetheart turbo-four engine, and agile chassis.” In its analysis, U.S. News credited the small luxury SUV for its “responsive handling, peppy engine, and comfortable cabin.”

Given the redesign planned for the 2024 BMW X2, there’s a good chance that automotive experts will rank the next-generation model even higher.

Additionally, the X2 GoldPlay features Galvanic Gold lines across the side of the vehicle, as well as in the cabin. The exterior color options for the special edition luxury SUV include Storm Bay, Skyscraper Grey, Alpine White, Black Sapphire, and San Remo Green.
