The cheapest Jeep SUV to maintain has had a rough time staying available to drivers. It has been discontinued twice but there are plans for it to return. Hopefully, the new model will continue its solid reputation for reliability.

The cheapest Jeep SUV to maintain was discontinued twice

Can you guess which Jeep SUV is the cheapest to maintain? The correct answer is the Jeep Cherokee, specifically the classic XJ model. It was manufactured between 1984 and 2001.

But while Cherokee models can survive on the road for decades, it’s struggled in the market. The Cherokee XJ was discontinued in 2001 to make space for the Jeep Liberty. Then the Liberty was discontinued in 2012, to make space for the Cherokee KL.

Sadly, the Cherokee KL didn’t last long despite kicking off with excellent sales. It got the axe in 2023. This left drivers with the Grand Cherokee or cheaper and smaller Jeep Compass

According to HotCars, the Cherokee XJ models equipped with the 4.0-liter inline-six engine can easily surpass 300,000 miles. It has a unibody construction, solid axles, and a durable powertrain. Plus, it’s straightforward and easy to work on.

Along with being easy to maintain, there are plenty of aftermarket parts still available to reduce repair costs. It has an annual average repair cost of about $520. It’s more reliable and affordable than the Jeep Wrangler.

It’s not exactly clear what to expect with the next-generation Jeep Cherokee. Stellantis is full of surprises, but it’s currently expected to arrive in 2026 with a hybrid powertrain. Hopefully, it will continue its legacy of being reliable, durable, and affordable.
