Rogue romance: Oregon car thief crashes into a woman also driving a stolen car

It sounds like the silliest love story out there— a meet-cute of wacky, comedy movie proportions. A man in Oregon was running from the police in a stolen car. The chase didn’t end until he slammed into another vehicle. But it turns out that the second vehicle was also stolen, and the young motorist behind the wheel was under the influence.

Have you ever seen “The Love Bug?” It’s a goofy trip back to 1968 and a supernatural bit of car culture: Herbie the thinking, feeling Volkswagen Beetle. As the title suggests, Herbie goes out of his way to help his at times bumbling driver find love. While an ill-gotten Toyota Land Cruiser isn’t quite a magical Beetle, the stolen car seemed to bring two similar spirits together. In just the weirdest way, I might add.
Randy Lee Cooper refused to stop for Newberg-Dundee police officers southwest of Portland, Oregon. Don’t picture an army of police chasing O.J. Simpson down a California highway, though. This chase wasn’t a long one. After covering several blocks, Cooper crashed the Land Cruiser into another vehicle at an intersection.
Police arrested Cooper on the spot for reckless driving, evading the police, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. But here’s the kicker: the car Cooper slammed into wasn’t exactly on the level. Police noted that the second car, the vehicle Cooper hit, was also stolen.
The driver, Kiristin Nicole Begue, was driving under he influence (DUI) in the stolen car at the time of the crash. Now, if this were an irreverent, silly story on the big screen, these two would be lovebirds on their way to a raunchy adventure. Who knows, maybe they’re out there stealing cars together.
