As has been said, no one wants to deal with a car recall. This is the case because they can be time-consuming despite the best efforts of auto mechanics at car dealerships. However, responding to a recall notice is necessary for safety. For several years, airbag recalls related to one company have impacted several vehicles. Unfortunately, many car owners haven’t taken steps to get repairs, and the faulty airbags are still on the road. Specifically, it has been found that Ohio has numerous cars with defective airbags.

According to WHIO, a new report from Carfax says more than 200,000 vehicles in Ohio are using faulty Takata airbags. Notably, the report uses data from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. As mentioned, there has been more than one car recall over this widespread airbag issue. In total, about 19 automakers used airbags from the new bankrupt Takata company.

So, what caused the car recall over the airbag issue in the first place? According to reports, the company used ammonium nitrate as a way to make the airbags inflate. However, this causes damage to the metal in the airbags, which means sharp objects could be deployed in the event of a car accident.

A Carfax staff member had this to say, “We’re a little alarmed to discover that six and a half million cars still need these airbags replaced, more than 200,000 in Ohio and almost 60,000 in the Columbus area.”

The staff member continued, “These airbags when they’re exposed to heat and humidity over a long period of time can develop moisture inside of those chemicals that creates an explosion that far exceeds what the expectations are, and that can turn the metal ring around the airbag into shrapnel, literally flying pieces of metal that can enter the cabin of a car.”

The quote goes on, “More than 400 people have been injured.”

People who are unsure if their vehicles were included in the previous car recall should check the NHTSA‘s Do Not Drive list. Of course, auto mechanics at the respective dealerships can replace the airbags, as this is a massive safety concern.
