A Canadian car will challenge the Ford Mustang in 2025
The V8-powered Dodge Charger might be dead for now, but the next generation of Charger is on the way. However, the Canadian car will have to pick up the slack left behind by the now-discontinued Challenger and the previous generation Charger, namely taking on the venerable Ford Mustang.
The new Dodge Charger will be a Canadian car in execution, and it has its sights set on the Ford Mustang
Ford CEO Jim Farley is adamant that the V8-powered Ford Mustang still has a place in the modern car market. Even as Dodge closed the books on the Charger and Challenger, the Mustang got another shot at eight-cylinder life with the seventh-generation “S650” lineup. However, the Charger is back as a Daytona EV and it’s gunning for the Mustang.
The all-electric Dodge Charger Daytona EV rolls off the line at the Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario. That’s right, Dodge’s electric muscle machine is a Canadian car. Still, a maple leaf tattoo doesn’t stop the Daytona from outmuscling the latest Ford Mustangs. In fact, the Daytona R/T produces 496 horsepower from its 400-volt architecture, 10 more than the Ford Mustang GT with its performance exhaust option.
At the higher end of things, the 670-horsepower Dodge Charger Daytona Scat Pack outmuscles all but one factory Ford Mustang from any generation. However, even the 760-horsepower Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 and its supercharged 5.2 V8 will have its hands full with the upcoming SRT Banshee.
It’s not just the EV from the Great White North, either
The electric Dodge Charger isn’t the only Canadian car with an American badge to claw its way out of Ontario and onto the Mustang’s tail. It’s the gas-powered Dodge Charger Sixpack, and it may go on sale earlier than expected.
One of the most common complaints among Mopar fans is the lack of a Hemi V8 in the new Dodge Charger. However, the range-topping Charger Sixpack H.O. will produce upwards of 550 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 3.0L Hurricane inline-six engine. The seventh-generation Ford Mustang might not have a Chevrolet Camaro or Hemi-powered Dodge Challenger to contend with, but the Canadian-built Charger is sure to put up a fight.
