The most common auto repair issues can’t really be avoided. That said, here are some of the problems nearly every car owner will face. Even if you stay on top of regular maintenance, there’s a high likelihood you’ll deal with at least one of these common car problems during the life of your vehicle.

Changing brake pads, keeping new tires on, and making sure things are aligned are all an integral part of responsible car ownership. Well-timed oil changes with the proper oil are paramount as well. Still, even if you absolutely baby your vehicle there’s a chance you’ll experience some normal wear and tear. This, ultimately, could mean you have to deal with one of the following common car problems.

What does that light on my dash mean?

Warning lights on your dash display can mean a number of different things. Consulting the manual should be your first step. This will help you decipher what the code means. Still, you’ll need to take your vehicle to a mechanic or someone with a relevant code reader in order to properly diagnose the repair issue.

There are hundreds of sensors that work together to keep your vehicle running smoothly. If one of them triggers a code, something’s not right. Problems can range from minor to major. Either way, you’ll want to get a professional diagnosis from someone you trust.

Is your car engine sputtering or misfiring?

If so, it probably needs attention. For the combustion in your engine to occur smoothly and effectively, things have to work in the right rhythm and timing. Plus, the water and fuel have to mix just so with correct volume of each in order for the combustion to happen in the chamber.

If you are dealing with a sputtering engine, it’s likely either your fuel or ignition system (or both) needs attention. There are many moving parts that create the power needed to propel a heavy automobile into motion. If any components are broken or worn out, the entire system is thrown off.

If your brakes are grinding or squeaking

This is another one of the most common auto repair issues. Most of us have experienced that moment when you pull up to a stoplight and you hear squeaking brakes. You pray that the sound isn’t emanating from your vehicle. If the sound is in fact coming from your unit there could be a problem.

While sometimes the fix is as simple as replacing brake pads, sometimes it’s more serious. Especially if the brakes sound as if they are grinding the problem like runs deeper than worn pads. Braking is one of the most important functions your car will ever perform. If your pedals feel soft or if you experience any unknown sounds from braking, get it checked out. This isn’t a common car problem that you want to play around with.
