A Sunday evening drive turned into a nightmare for a family traveling through Riverside, California. Following a horrible multi-vehicle collision on the 215 Freeway, a frantic rescue effort unfolded as brave bystanders and first responders worked desperately to pull two adults, two infants, and a dog from a completely destroyed vehicle.
Tragically, despite the heroic efforts of other drivers who had pulled over to help, authorities have confirmed that the highway wreck resulted in at least one fatality.
Good Samaritans Rush into the Chaos
This took place just after 7:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the 215 Freeway, right near the Eucalyptus Avenue exit. While the exact cause of the multi-car pileup is still under investigation, the aftermath left one particular vehicle utterly demolished, trapping the family of four inside the crushed cabin.
Before emergency vehicles even reached the scene, several drivers pulled over, jumped out of their cars, and sprinted toward the wreckage to help. One of those Good Samaritans, identified as Cianca C., detailed the struggle to manually rip the crushed doors open to reach the terrified infants in the back seat.
“We all tried to pry the doors open. They were pulling sporadically, and I decided to say, ‘One, two, three,’ and we would pull,” the bystander explained. “Obviously, we are just human. We are not machines, so we could not get it open. We urgently tried to get to the children in the back, but we were not successful. I tried keeping the parents calm and telling them that I was there, trying to get any information that I could.”
While the group struggled with the heavy, crumpled steel, another bystander successfully managed to grab and hold onto the family’s dog, who had also been riding in the car during the impact.
The Jaws of Life Were Used But Still A Tragic Outcome
Because the vehicle was so badly deformed, the strength of the group simply wasn’t enough. When professional rescue crews finally arrived on the scene, they were forced to use the Jaws of Life. The heavy-duty hydraulic rescue tools were used to cut through the metal and finally pull out the trapped adults and babies.
All four family members were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Their current medical conditions have not yet been released to the public.
However, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) unfortunately admitted there was at least one fatality as a result of the incident. As of now, law enforcement has not clarified whether the deceased individual was one of the adults or one of the young children inside the demolished car, or if the death was actually someone from one of the other vehicles involved in the pileup.
To manage the scene, the CHP completely shut down all northbound lanes of the 215 Freeway, leaving the major artery closed for several hours late into Sunday night.
