The ink is still wet on Khalil Shakir’s eye-watering contract extension with the Buffalo Bills. It’ll put tens of millions of dollars in the 25-year-old NFL player’s pocket, but he asserts it won’t change him. Instead, Shakir maintains he won’t sell his beloved used car, a Subaru from 2021.

Khalil Shakir signed a $60.2 million contract with the Buffalo Bills, but fortune won’t put a for-sale sign in his four-year-old Subaru

“I’m going to put myself on blast here a little bit. I drive a Subaru,” Khalil Shakir said at a press conference following his newly-signed extension with the Buffalo Bills. The $60.2 million extension keeps Shakir in a Bills helmet through 2029. However, even with fortune on his side, Shakir says he’ll be keeping his white 2021 Subaru.

“The guys always make fun of me for what I drive. Curtis was like ‘Congrats, man. Now you can go get yourself another car.'” Shakir was referring to Curtis Samuel, teammate and Bills wide receiver. However, Samuel will be disappointed if he expected Shakir to pull up to the next practice in a Bentley or a Ferrari.

“I don’t really splurge much,” Shakir told interviewers at the conference. “I probably will get a new car but it’s not going to be anything crazy.” He joked that he might drive “something else in here every now and then so Curtis sees and doesn’t make anymore jokes.” But even the prospect of a new car doesn’t compromise how Shakir feels about his Subaru.

The 2021-model Subaru was a sensible purchase following Shakir’s fifth-round draft pick in 2022. “I feel some sort of way toward it,” Shakir said at the press conference. “I think it looks crazy but I love it.” Nearly any car enthusiast can identify with a statement like that.

Shakir isn’t the only big earner to keep his old wheels

Some celebrities keep their old cars, despite having millions of dollars to their names. For instance, rapper and actor Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges still has his 1993 Acura Legend. Now, the gold-record-holding performer is comfortably a millionaire. However, Bridges likes to use the car to reflect on his past and stay grounded, posting “Never forget where you come from,” on a social media post of the car.
