Ventura County booking records show Britney Spears was taken into custody late Wednesday for suspected DUI. She was later released early Thursday, after a traffic stop handled by the California Highway Patrol.
Update: Reports are now adding that the singer may have been under the influence of drugs as well as alcohol. According to law enforcement, no drugs were found in the car, but chemical tests are ongoing after officers suspected her taking drugs.
The 44-year-old pop star was taken into custody after a traffic stop in Southern California, according to booking information in the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office system. The California Highway Patrol was listed as the arresting agency. Media reports say she is due back in court in early May. The underlying allegations have not yet been detailed publicly.
But while the paperwork and headline are now released to the world, the specifics of what prompted the stop, as well as what evidence the arresting officers have, is unclear.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Office records cited by ABC’s local stations place the arrest on Wednesday, 4 March. Spears was then released early Thursday, 5 March, after being processed. Those same records list the CHP as the arresting agency.
As of Thursday, CHP had not publicly provided a detailed account of the traffic stop. Nonetheless, law-enforcement sources told the news outlet the arrest was connected to a suspected DUI. Several outlets described it as a “cite-and-release” arrest, meaning she was not held in custody for an extended period of time.

The booking information also lists a scheduled appearance at Ventura County Superior Court on 4 May 2026. The next concrete date in the case is procedural rather than evidential. It’s likely more details will be released closer to that court date.
In a statement published by a number of outlets, a representative for Spears said: “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable.” The representative added: “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law.”
It concluded: “Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”
It’s likely that further documentation will be released to the public ahead of the 4 May hearing.
