The 2014 New York International Automobile Show will kick off April 16 at the Jacob Javits Center on Manhattan’s West Side. Since the show’s debut in 1900 as North America’s first automotive exhibition, the NY auto show has been the place to go to see interesting things on two and four wheels. In the 2014 edition, automakers will bring performance concepts, World Car Award winners, supercars, and remakes of old standards to the big city.
More than thirty vehicles will make their debut at the New York auto show. Here are six new automobiles that have been let out of the bag ahead of the event.
1. 2015 Ford Focus
When the best selling car on planet Earth gets a makeover, it’s an event worthy of auto expo headlines. Ford will showcase two new versions of its 2015 Focus beginning April 16 in New York. The 2015 Focus Sedan comes with a refreshed exterior, enhanced interior, upgraded technology, and a 1.0-liter Ecoboost engine that should deliver unparalleled efficiency.
In addition, Ford will deliver the 2015 Focus Electric for New York audiences. Specifications of Ford’s new electric vehicle have not been provided ahead of the show, making this debut one of the most awaited from the automaker’s corner. The popular Focus ST “hot hatch” will be revealed to the public later on in 2014. All three 2015 models are expected to go on sale before the year’s end.
Ford sold nearly 1.1 million models of the Focus around the world in 2013, which made it the best selling car globally for the second straight year. Like Toyota has learned to upgrade its Camry without messing too much with a good thing, Ford has to prove it has the Midas touch with new Focus models.
2. Bentley Flying Spur V8
There are compact cars that are the bread-and-butter of automakers’ annual takes, and then there are Bentleys. The Bentley Hybrid and Continental GT are making their world debuts in global auto shows, but in New York the elegant, powerful Flying Spur V8 is getting its closeup. Packing a 4.0-liter V8 capable of 500 horsepower on 488 lb-ft of torque, it’s not the 616-hp W12 of Bentley lore but rather a downsized engine model for the luxury sedan driver who only needs 500 horses on the average day.
Equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, the Flying Spur V8 will vault from 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. The vehicle’s top speed of 183 mph would likely come off as elegant.
3. 2015 Jeep Renegade
The Chrysler Group has some Dodge muscle cars debuts scheduled for the New York auto show, but those rides are still under wraps. On the other hand, the 2015 Jeep Renegade has been revealed ahead of the Fiat Chrysler exhibit. Jeep estimates that the new front-drive utility vehicle will get 30 mpg in both the 1.4-liter and 2.4 liter Tigershark engine models.
This Jeep will replace the Patriot and Jeep Compass in the lineup. Renegades will appear for the first time in North America following their Geneva debut. Official fuel economy estimates may arrive with the automobiles in New York Javits Center.
4. Rolls Royce Ghost Series II
Another Geneva debut that will get its North American premiere in New York is the Rolls Royce Ghost Series II. Rolls highlights the “effortless technology” of its interior controls, the satellite-aided safety technology, Head Up Display, and infrared camera with a range of hundreds of feet. It must feel like driving a futuristic hovercraft, but the 563-hp V12 expected to be under the hood should remind you the Ghost II is just a powerful car with exquisite tech after all.
5. 2015 Mercedes Benz S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe
No auto show is complete without a supercar from the Mercedes Benz performance division. The S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe will make its debut at the New York Auto Show on April 16. Its 5.5-liter biturbo V8 can generate a maximum 577 horsepower on a massive 664 lb-ft of torque. In addition, the S63 AMG Coupe can blast from 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 183 mph.
Despite the otherworldly power and performance specs, Mercedes is going out of its way to emphasize the efficiency of its V8. Mercedes managed to shed 140 pounds from the model while adding 41 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque. That’s the Mercedes Benz engineering car lovers have come to adore.
6. 2015 BMW X3
Last but not least, the new BMW X3 luxury crossover will join the 4 Series Gran Coupe and two other models in the automaker’s lineup of NY Auto Show debuts. The 2015 X3 will get style upgrades in addition to new engines and drivetrains. On the appearance front, its twin-kidney grille takes up even more of the vehicle’s front, while both bumpers have been upgraded by BMW.
Grabbing the most attention is the introduction of a diesel engine in the 2015 X3 lineup. The 2.0-liter turbodiesel model will deliver an impressive 280 lb-ft of torque to go along with 180 hp. In the 2.0-liter gasoline model, 240 hp is on the menu. BMW will have a slick convertible as well as an eDrive model to go along with its 4 Series Gran Coupe debut in New York, but lovers of the luxury crossover are bound to be pleased by the diesel X3?s presence.
