For nearly a decade, the BMW K 1600 has been the gold standard for high-speed, long-distance touring. Now, thousands of these bikes are being recalled for a defect that could cause them to catch fire: a faulty reverse gear control unit.
According to a new safety report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the German automaker is recalling a huge swath of its six-cylinder touring bikes due to a potential fire risk. The recall, filed under campaign number 26V214000, affects some of the most popular models in BMW’s lineup.
The Source of the Fire Risk
The problem lies with the seal for the reverse gear control unit. On affected motorcycles, this seal can deteriorate over time, allowing moisture to creep inside the sensitive electronics of the control unit. This water intrusion can cause a short circuit, leading the unit to overheat.
An overheating control unit buried deep within the bike’s power train is a serious issue. The NHTSA warns that this condition significantly increases the risk of a vehicle fire, whether the bike is being ridden or is parked.

Which BMW Motorcycles Are Affected?
This recall covers an extensive range of K 1600 models spanning nearly a decade of production. If you own one of the following BMW motorcycles, your bike is likely included:
2017–2025 K 1600 GT
2017–2025 K 1600 GTL
2017–2025 K 1600 B
2018–2025 K 1600 Grand America
Owners of these bikes should watch for official communication from the manufacturer.
