BMW driver caught inhaling balloon of laughing gas–on the highway
Imagine this: you’re cruising down the highway when you glance at the BMW in the next lane. The driver has one hand on the wheel, the other clutching a bright orange balloon. You blink, confused, as they casually inhale from the inflated balloon while navigating a motorway. The surreal scene feels like something out of a comedy sketch—until you remember you’re sharing the road with them.
Thankfully, UK authorities are cracking down on dangerous antics like these with Operation Snap, a citizen-driven initiative that lets drivers submit dash cam footage of reckless behavior. Police review the videos and issue fines or penalties to offenders caught on camera. Since its launch in 2017, the program has exposed everything from erratic overtakes to blatant texting at red lights.
Take, for example, the taxi driver in Dudley, who casually scrolled through his phone while stopped at a light. A fellow motorist caught the moment on camera and sent it to the police. The result? Six points on his license and a £400 fine. Another clip showed a driver speeding through a red light, barely missing a pedestrian on a crosswalk. That driver was banned for a year and fined nearly $3,500.
But the BMW driver and their balloon take the cake. Footage sent to the West Midlands Police captured the motorist holding the balloon in their mouth while gripping the steering wheel. Authorities suspect the balloon contained nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, which is illegal to use recreationally. Obviously, it’s also legal to drive while on any substance that impairs you. The driver received a $900 fine and six points on their license—a hefty penalty for an equally hefty dose of bad judgment.
Here’s where the irony inflates faster than that balloon. Nitrous oxide is famous for boosting engine performance in Fast & Furious-style street racing. But instead of adding horsepower to a car, this BMW driver seemed more interested in inhaling a different kind of “boost.” Spoiler alert: it didn’t end well.
You never know what you’ll see on the road, but one thing’s for sure: staying safe is always the better option. Leave the balloons—and the bad decisions—off the highway.
