Living in a city has plenty of perks, but parking is not one of those perks. Insuring a car or SUV in the city can be expensive due to a variety of factors. Consumer Reports picked two of the best used SUVs for city driving and parking that won’t leave you circling the block for a bigger spot. What makes one sport utility vehicle better than another for city living? A shorter length, a backup camera, and decent fuel economy.

Looking at the list of used SUVs for city driving, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 checks all of the boxes. For instance, Consumer Reports says the length of the CX-5 is smaller than some compact sedans at only 179 inches. The 2017 Mazda SUV also has a short turn radius of 38 feet, making it easy to park and get around. Mazda made this vehicle spacious in the back and cabin for carrying whatever you need to, but it only gets 19 mpg in the city.

Consumer Reports gave this used SUV good scores for reliability and owner satisfaction. Standard features include forward collision warning (FCW) and automatic emergency braking (AEB). The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2017 Mazda CX-5 the Top Safety Pick Plus award.

Fuel economy: 19 mpg in the city

One of the best used SUVs for city driving is Honda’s CR-V

The 2015 Honda CR-V has a lot to offer buyers. Even though it is a smaller SUV, it has plenty of cargo space and rear-seat room. Plus, it only measures 179 inches long and has a turning radius of 38 feet. Consumer Reports gave the 2015 CR-V high scores on the road test and for reliability. Some reliability trouble spots, like the engine, transmission, and drive system, were not issues for owners.

One of the drawbacks is the lack of safety features. 2015 just didn’t have that technology as standard fare, but the top Touring trim has AEB. The IIHS also gave the 2015 Honda CR-V the Top Safety Pick Plus award.

Fuel economy: 18 mpg in the city

The Subaru Impreza Sport is technically a hatchback

Owners report getting 28 mpg overall from the 2016 Subaru Impreza Sport, which is good for an all-wheel drive sedan. The Subaru Impreza Sport is 174 inches long and can whip a U-turn in 38 feet. The regular Impreza is only 180 inches long if you want the sedan version. Thanks to the easy access hatch, the Sport version is shorter and more practical. I

f you can find the Impreza Limited, the optional EyeSight system includes AEB. The Impreza has OK scores for reliability, but it’s still one of the best used SUVs for city driving and parking. The 2016 Impreza was also a Top Safety Pick Plus this year and received good test scores. It also received five-star scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Price Range:  $15,525 – $18,975

At this point, the best used SUVs for city driving are the ones you can actually find. If you can get a good deal on a used SUV with good fuel economy and safety features, jump on it. Hopefully, the used vehicle market will start to cool off and prices will come down.
