Best Used SUVs for City Driving According to Consumer Reports

Sorting through the classifieds to find the best-used SUVs is no easy feat. Given how popular the SUV segment has become in the U.S. market, there are more options available than ever before. Thankfully, Consumer Reports published its two picks for the best models for city driving.

Aside from offering affordable price tags, these picks have excellent reliability and safety ratings. Since city commuting is some of the least efficient driving you can do, these picks also have excellent fuel-consumption ratings.

2017 Mazda CX-5: $15,400 – $19,525

Aside from being a top pick in this list of best-used SUVs, the brand-new Mazda CX-5 is still one of the best models around. The exact model Consumer Reports is recommending is the 2017. This used SUV carries an average price between $15,400 to $19,525 for a vehicle in good condition. When you consider that the 2017 CX-5 had a base price of $24,045, there are some serious savings on offer.

According to Consumer Reports, part of what makes the 2017 Mazda CX-5 one of the best-used SUVs around is its size. The CX-5 manages to be smaller than some compact sedans and, as a result, is quite maneuverable in city driving scenarios. Regardless, it offers plenty of interior and cargo space, so there isn’t a massive trade-off.

Additionally, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 features the updated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which is more powerful and fun to drive than its predecessor. Lastly, the 2017 model specifically is one of the best-used SUVs because of its standard features. According to Consumer Reports, the CX-5 got standard low-speed automatic emergency braking, backup camera. Some dealerships will even allow you to retrofit Android Auto or Apple CarPlay connectivity.

No list of best-used SUVs would be complete without an entry from Honda. The model Consumer Reports recommends is the 2015 due to its excellent reliability ratings. Additionally, the 2015 Honda CR-V is just as small as the aforementioned Mazda, making it great for cities.

The reason why the 2015 Honda CR-V specifically is one of the best-used SUVs has to do with its engine. According to Consumer Reports, the 2015 model got a redesigned 2.4-liter engine and a CVT. As a result, this CR-V was marginally more efficient than previous model years. Additionally, the 2015 got a slightly stiffer suspension, which helped it drive much better than its predecessors.

Most importantly, the 2015 Honda CR-V received plenty of excellent equipment, such as a backup camera as standard. Additionally, higher-trim models feature Honda’s Sensing suite of safety features, which includes automatic emergency braking. Expect to pay between $13,075 and $18,600 for this used Honda.

2016 Subaru Impreza: $11,550 – $15,850

Admittedly, this last contender isn’t one of the best-used SUVs because it’s actually a hatchback. Regardless, it is worth considering for city drivers, thanks to its small size and ample cargo space. One thing that stood out about the 2016 Subaru Impreza to Consumer Reports is that it includes all-wheel-drive as standard. Regardless, Consumer Reports found that the hatchback still managed to deliver solid fuel-efficiency ratings during testing.

Unlike the other best-used SUVs, the 2016 Subaru Impreza is smaller, making it easier to park in crowded cities. Additionally, its large windows provide excellent visibility. Consumer Reports notes that the 2016 model has average reliability ratings but can be had with safety features such as automatic emergency braking. The added benefit of this hatch over the others is that you can buy one between $11,550 and $15,850. As a result, the way to go might not be an SUV at all.
