When it comes to the best midsize luxury SUVs, it would be remiss not to include the 2019 Lexus RX 350. U.S. News says the RX has a “superb” predicted reliability rating and a long history of dependability. The standard V6 engine gets good fuel economy, and the cabin is comfortable. You can find a used RX 350 for under $50,000 these days, but most options will be over $40,000. Buyers could opt for a five or seven-seater configuration.

U.S. News and J.D. Power give the 2019 Lexus RX 350 a predicted reliability score of five out of five. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued three recalls for this version of the RX, mostly related to the fuel pump. However, the group gave the RX high scores on its safety tests.

The GLE gets between 12 and 17 mpg in the city and between 18 and 23 mpg on the highway, depending on the engine choice.

U.S. News and J.D. Power gave the GLE a four out of five predicted reliability rating. This SUV does have four recalls related to the electrical system, roof/pillars, and a disabled eCall system. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE its Top Safety Pick Plus award. Overall, the GLE is one of the best used luxury midsize SUVs over $40,000.

Don’t overlook the Audi Q7

Buyers of the 2019 Audi Q7 can expect an upscale interior, good handling, and impressive engine options. While the third row is best for children, it does have the added room back there. Audi equipped the Q7 with all-wheel drive and 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

U.S. News and J.D. Power gave the Q7 a below-average reliability rating. It has a few minor recalls, but be sure the previous owner addressed the side curtain airbag recall before buying. Both the IIHS and NHTSA gave the 2019 Audi Q7 high scores on its crashworthiness tests.

Having a higher budget makes the search for the best used luxury midsize SUVs over $40,000 a bit easier, but there are still a lot of choices. Lexus, Mercedes, and Audi definitely know a thing or two about producing reliable SUVs, and these options are no exception.
