Ford’s Expedition SUV has been on the market since the late 90s. This three-row SUV was meant to be a larger version of the popular Bronco since large sport utility vehicles were all the rage at the time. With so many options to choose from, these are some of the best used Ford Expedition years and one to skip over.

2020 is one of the best used Ford Expedition SUV years to look for

Upon reviewing the best Ford Expedition years, Edmunds gave the 2020 version high marks. This SUV has plenty of space in the cabin and cargo area, which means it’s great for families. Ford’s twin-turbo V6 is powerful enough to offer quick acceleration, even with a sport utility vehicle of its size. The seats are comfortable, and it manages to tow 9,000 pounds, which is kind of impressive.

The experts found it a reliable option, and owners seemed pleased with the ownership. Regarding safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it an overall five-star rating.

The best used Ford Expedition SUV years to look for, including the 2013 version

2013 was an excellent year for the Expedition SUV. If buyers are looking for a roomy option that still has plenty of modern technology. The folding seats offer more flexibility for passengers and cargo, and the 2013 Expedition can tow more than its rivals. Ford also improved the towing situation by adding an integrated brake controller. Edmunds says that while the 2013 version is a bit aged, it “still meets the requirements for shoppers needing a vehicle with significant passenger, cargo and towing capacities.”

The NHTSA gave this year a four-star safety rating overall. Areas like the side crash, side barrier, and passenger crash test ratings were also high.

List Price Range: $17,999 – $25,998

Avoid 2015 of this Ford sport utility vehicle, if possible

Overall, 2015 just wasn’t one of the best years for the used Ford Expedition. It is still roomy and has a robust V6 engine to keep it moving. Towing is no issue for this vehicle, either, with a max tow rating of 9,200 pounds when properly equipped. However, it just feels too big sometimes. The visibility is lacking; even though it has a rearview camera, it is still quite hard to park.

Reliability wasn’t a strong point for 2015, either. Owners report more issues with the 2015 version than the 2013. One high point is a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA. So while it isn’t the most reliable or easy-to-drive option, it still offers a safe ride.

List Price Range: $18,550 – $29,998

Ford SUVs tend to last a long time, which means people hold onto vehicles like the Expedition as long as possible. If you can find one that has been well cared for by another Ford fan, that might be your best bet. It is also possible to find a 2020 version with a warranty left. As the 2023 version hits the market, perhaps that means a better deal on an outgoing option.
