One of the major indicators of change within the automotive industry is the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS). J.D. Power says supply chain issues and high vehicle prices contributed to the problems experienced by new car owners. Since most people are looking for reliable trucks, what were the best trucks in the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study?

J.D. Power used responses from 84,165 buyers and lessees of new cars for 2022 in the first few months to get a feel for quality. Compared to the 2021 IQS, owners reported an 11% increase in problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). The industry average for 2022 is 180 PP100, 18 more than last year. In the IQS, a lower score means better quality.

Ford, as a brand, took home two awards in this year’s IQS. The 2022 Ford Ranger ended up with the best score in the category of midsize pickup trucks. Two other trucks also impressed owners on the Initial Quality Study. The Jeep Gladiator and Chevrolet Colorado were the other two midsize trucks that didn’t give owners problems. Looking for reliable pickup trucks? Start there.

The Chevrolet Silverado was another pick for best trucks in the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study

In the category of large pickup trucks, which J.D. Power calls a large light-duty pickup truck, the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado came in first. GM actually had the most awards out of any other brand on the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study. When it comes to the best pickup trucks for 2022, the Ford Ranger was the superior vehicle.

Other vehicles from the Chevrolet brand include the Corvette, Equinox, Malibu, and Tahoe SUV. The Chevy Corvette was the highest-ranking GM vehicle with 101 PP100. That explains why GM is at the top of the 2022 IQS, and Chevrolet came in third overall with 147 PP100. Buick came in first this year with 139 PP100, and Dodge came in second with 143 PP100.

For a heavy-duty pickup truck option, check out the Chevrolet Silverado HD

There aren’t that many options on the market for large heavy-duty pickup trucks. With that said, owners of the Chevrolet Silverado HD reported fewer problems than owners of similar large trucks. The Ford Super Duty and GMC Sierra HD came in second and third, but the Silverado was one of the most reliable pickup trucks in the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study.

J.D. Power uses responses from actual owners to rank the least problematic new cars, trucks, and SUVs. However, it often has very different scores than similar companies like Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, or Consumer Reports. In fact, Consumer Reports totally disagrees With J.D. Power about the 2021 Chevy Silverado Reliability. It is always a good idea to get a second opinion, especially when it comes to pickup trucks.
