Best Luxury Full-Size SUVs of 2022, According to Consumer Reports

Each class of vehicles receives an overall rank from Consumer Reports every year. The ranking is based on valuable metrics like predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, a road test, and more. Surprisingly, the best luxury full-size SUVs of 2022 come from three different automakers you might not expect. Although, only one ranked notably higher than the rest.

What makes a luxury full-size SUV the best? With luxury comes comfort both in seating and space and in the smoothness of the ride. Technology and features are at the forefront of any good luxury vehicle. Climbing into an SUV labeled “luxury,” you expect to see a few things that make you go “wow!”. Most importantly, every one has to be reliable, and the best way to tell they are is from previous owners’ experiences and opinions on each model.

2022 Lincoln Navigator

One luxury full-size SUV you might not have expected is from Ford’s luxury brand, Lincoln. The Navigator is one of the best options in its class. It provides ample space for passengers and cargo alike and is well-equipped with features and tech. Specifically, it scored perfectly in trunk and cargo space, interior fit and finish, and rear-seat comfort categories from Consumer Reports.

Additionally, the Lincoln Navigator has excellent acceleration, going from 0 to 60 in just 6.2 seconds. Based on previous owners’ experiences, satisfaction for the new model year received a near-perfect score. Falling just short of the same score, the Navigator scored mid-range for reliability. Lastly, a slightly higher than average road test score puts Lincoln’s machine ahead of most other models but still a bit short of the top dogs.

You know, the one that isn’t available in the United States for the next model year? In its American swan-song model year, it’s the second-best of all luxury full-size SUVs. Fortunately, the Lexus LX is nearly identical and is available for purchase if you’re interested. The 2021 Land Cruiser received excellent scores from Consumer Reports across the board. A respectable high-but-not-perfect score for both predicted reliability and owner satisfaction makes it one of the best available.

Additionally, the above-average road test score it earned is enough to make you take a second look. After all, not many vehicles score that high on a road test from CR. Secondly, it received perfect scores for its transmission, front-seat comfort, and interior fit and finish. Its biggest downside, like the Lincoln Navigator, is fuel economy.

Consumer Reports Doesn’t Recommend Its Best Rated Pickup Truck

The best luxury full-size SUV of 2022 is the 2022 BMW X7. There’s a bit of a balancing act going on between the scores this model received. Most importantly, let’s start with the class-leading road test score. According to Consumer Reports, the $84,000 model it tested feels worth every penny. That’s a lot of value, but with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6, BMW’s offering lives to impress.

It scored perfectly in even more areas than the Land Cruiser and Navigator. The perfect scores it received are its transmission, lack of noise, front and rear seat comfort, and interior fit and finish. Additionally, above-average ratings were awarded for braking, emergency handling, and the overall ride. Finally, although it doesn’t have incredible gas mileage, it is much better than the other models. An overall MPG of 22 is very palatable for an SUV of these proportions.

Finally, impressively high owner satisfaction scores highlight the driving experience. Comfort wasn’t close behind, making it by far the best in those areas. BMW’s luxury full-size SUV lacks in one place where BMW seems always to struggle: reliability. However, its mid-range score is still better than every vehicle in this class CR rated so far.

Which luxury full-size SUV is right for you?

Are one of these SUVs calling your name? If you require plenty of space, both cargo and passenger, tons of features, and a smooth ride, one of these SUVs is suitable for you. Unfortunately, many models are sold out or backed up for a very long time. However, some alternatives are available, like the cheaper Navigator, the Ford Expedition, or the “available in America” Lexus LX.
