No matter which version of the 2022 Toyota 4Runner you buy, they’ll all come with some of the same equipment. For example, the 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 270 horsepower is standard across all models. In addition, the SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, and Limited models are each available with front-wheel or four-wheel drive. However, the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trims are four-wheel drive only.

Next, the base SR5 model gets plenty of features to start. For $38,105, owners gain LED headlights, 17-inch wheels, roof rails, a power rear window, underbody skid plates, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, 120-volt power outlet, an 8-inch touchscreen, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto are standard.

Experts disagree on the best 4Runner trim

Firstly, Car and Driver recommend the 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road. The publication cites a lower price tag than the TRD Pro, standard four-wheel drive, and extra equipment as reasons to buy this model. Additionally, the TRD Off-Road has an electronically locking rear differential, selectable drive modes (Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control), and an optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension for improved off-road performance.

On the other hand, Edmunds recommends the 2022 Toyota 4Runner Trail Special Edition. In short, it’s the same as the SR5 base model but gains a Yakima roof rack, dark-painted wheels and trim, a portable beverage cooler, and a sliding rear cargo deck with underfloor storage. For just a few thousand more than the base model, Edmunds thinks it’s worth the price. Moreover, the reviewers love that it’s available in rear- or four-wheel drive, claiming TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro models are only necessary for buyers who are very serious about off-roading.

What is the best 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim?

Weighing the options, we have to agree with Car and Driver about the TRD Off-Road trim. Although it’s more pricey than Edmunds’ recommendation, it’s not by much. Customers purchasing a 4Runner are likely interested in off-road driving. As a result, they should pay a little more to get better performance. Plus, who doesn’t want all that extra equipment? If you’re shopping for a new Toyota 4Runner, the TRD Off-Road model is the best trim.
