A race truck driver accidentally ran into four onlookers during the annual Baja 1000 event in Mexico. Two people were killed as a result.

The Baja 1000 takes place in the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico, but it attracts competitors, teams, and attendees worldwide. Some race classes feature vintage cars, dirt bikes, “Baja Buggies,” and the iconic Trophy Trucks.

Trophy Trucks are designed to make hopping over dunes and racing at triple-digit speeds look effortless. They have long travel suspension and high-output engines to jump long distances at high speeds. They’re the favorite class of many due to their insane abilities.

However, during the event last week, four patrons were unlucky enough to get too close to one. The driver of an orange Buehler Motorsports race truck revved the engine to excite attendees inside the mechanical inspection area. The driver suddenly lurched toward the spectators and crashed into four people at high speeds.

After rushing both men to the hospital, doctors identified them as Fred Goff James and Esteban Velázquez as reported by CBS 8 San Diego. They later died from their injuries. The other two attendees survived with minor injuries.

The series execs say it was sabotage

Juan Tintos, a spokesperson for the series, SCORE International, confirmed to the outlet a competing team was likely trying to cut their competition from the race.

“The incident was due to the imprudence of a member of a competing team, which is why the vehicle was confiscated and the person responsible was arrested,” he said. “We are working to ensure that the injured receive all the necessary medical attention.”

Police confiscated the trophy truck and found “Kansas City, Missouri” painted on the driver’s door.

Tintos also confirmed the incident reflected poorly on the series, as local and state authorities are imposing penalties.

“SCORE is going to be sanctioned. We have already been informed by the municipal authorities and well, you have also seen how we are always looking at different ways to apply the best possible security measures and this is something that we regret and that we are going to analyze,” he continued.
