Some midsize SUVs certainly look promising on paper with hearty powertrains and long lists of safety features. Volvo cars, in particular, are known for their stunning interior presentation and materials, including tailored wool upholstery and brushed metal surfaces.

Still, even flashy luxury SUVs can have annoying or unsafe problems. Here is a look at recalls for three well-known SUVs.

1. Volvo XC90

Automatic emergency brakes were an issue with 2019-2020 models. Another problem included faulty seatbelt retractors. With recent models, an issue “may prevent the combustion engine from starting, causing a loss of drive power.” RepairPal notes a total of 30 recalls.

Car and Driver was impressed with the 2023 Volvo’s luxurious design, referring to the model’s performance as “graceful.” The SUV earns a J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 75/100.

2. Chevrolet Equinox

According to RepairPal, the Chevrolet Equinox, introduced in 2004, has a total of 28 recalls so far. The Equinox saw its highest amount of recalls in 2018. The issues revealed included the driveshaft, fuel pump, and brake issues.

According to Car and Driver, the Chevrolet Equinox has many goodies with considerable cabin space and a willing chassis. The SUV earned a predicted reliability score of 82/100 via J.D. Power.

3. Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 began production in 2012. According to RepairPal, the CX-5 has 8 recalls so far, which makes it the SUV with the fewest recalls. These issues include loose steering knuckles, weak lighting, and liftgate-related problems.

According to Car and Driver, the newest 2023 CX-5 has an elegant exterior design with a richer interior than competitors. The rear seats may be a little small with less towing capacity, but it still remains driver-friendly with a chic and upscale design. Per J.D. Power, it has a predicted reliability score of 90/100.

Every consumer has their own desires when it comes to car shopping. Some want speed and luxury. Others want reliability and dependability above anything else. Like these three options, recalls can play a factor in your decision-making process.
