Avoid the 2020 Subaru Legacy If You Want a Midsize Car That Feels Luxurious

When it comes to efficient vehicles, midsize sedans are becoming more popular. Prices for these cars are more budget-friendly, and you can still get plenty of decent features. One vehicle that people often wonder about is the 2020 Subaru Legacy.

Out of the 11 midsize sedan options on the market today, U.S. News ranks the Legacy in the No. 8 slot with a score of 7.6. They go on to explain exactly what they liked and didn’t like about this midsize sedan and why it falls toward the bottom of their list.

What U.S. News liked about the 2020 Subaru Legacy

This Subaru brings a whole new design for the sedan this year. As a part of the new Legacy, a new turbocharged four-cylinder motor replaces the previous V6 option. The Legacy offers a standard four-cylinder on the base trims that can put out 182 hp, which is up from the 175 hp that the previous models had.

The improvements in the redesign make for a nice interior with comfortable and supportive seating and plenty of leg and headroom in the cabin. Riding in the Subaru Legacy is a dream with a prime suspension that absorbs most road surface imperfections. 

There are plenty of driver assistance features on the standard package along with several nice amenities like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The infotainment display turns heads because it offers an 11.6-inch vertical-based screen on higher trims, which makes seeing and accessing it much easier.

While U.S. News liked several things about the Subaru Legacy, there are still a few things that didn’t quite impress them. This Subaru sedan has great handling and decent engine options, but it’s outshined by other cars in its class that can outperform it hands down.

One of the biggest detractors from the 2020 Subaru Legacy is the small cargo space it offers. At 15.1 cubic feet, it’s barely big enough to handle your luggage or your shopping purchases. Rivals of the Legacy have more room for storage, and they don’t cost that much more to get it. 

According to U.S. News review, JD Power gave the Legacy a two-out-of-five-star rating for predicted reliability, which is pretty low. Subaru has had a few bad years with the Legacy in the past, but with each redesign, it’s improving its product all the time. However, now and then something creeps up to plague the company.

How the 2020 Subaru Legacy compares to its rivals

U.S. News likes the Subaru Legacy for what it has to offer. But when you compare it to other vehicles in its class, is it really worth dropping your hard-earned money on? They don’t really think so. 

If you’re looking for a more luxury-based sedan, there are many more cars that land higher on their list of the best midsize cars for the 2020 season that you should consider instead. 

For example, the Kia Optima is rated No. 1 on their list with a score of 8.6. It has peppier engines, above-average cargo space, and lots of higher-end materials in the interior. The Legacy is just average. 

The Toyota Camry and Honda Accord also have higher quality materials and have more of a luxury car feel to them. Subaru’s Legacy just can’t compete with some of these hard-hitting rivals. 

The 2020 Subaru Legacy sedan is still a decent car to buy, despite the fact that it isn’t seeing a large number of sales. But, if having a higher-end luxury vehicle is important to you, you might want to consider passing this one by and checking out one of its rivals instead.
