After many years, the Nissan Frontier is finally getting a major redesign, and it’ll debut in the 2021 model year. The Frontier has managed to stick around for so long because it was an affordable truck that was capable enough. That said, while it was affordable, it definitely was not a comfortable truck by any means.

The 2020 Nissan Frontier is the least comfortable truck of the year

With an interior score of a mere 5.2 out of 10, U.S. News said that the 2020 Nissan Frontier was the least comfortable pickup truck from the 2020 model year. It wasn’t even close, and the second least comfortable truck, the 2020 Ford Ranger, got a 6.1 out of 10.

This isn’t all that surprising since the Frontier hasn’t been given a major update in over a decade, and as a result, its interior is stuck in the past compared to its competitors.

In terms of technology and smart features, the Nissan Frontier simply doesn’t have much, if anything. U.S. News said that the 2020 Frontier currently has a standard 7-inch touchscreen display, but it’s not compatible with Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto. U.S. News also wrote in its full review of the 2020 Frontier that it simply doesn’t have any smart safety features available.

Not only is the Frontier’s interior outdated, but it can also get pretty noisy. The seats are average in terms of the comfort they provide, but U.S. News also said that the Frontier’s seats can get a little cramped. That said, one of the few positives that U.S. News mentioned about the Frontier’s interior was that, while outdated, it uses sturdy materials at the very least.

While it’s clear that any truck shoppers looking for a comfortable truck should avoid the Nissan Frontier at all costs, those generally aren’t the people who are buying and driving the Frontier in the first place. The Frontier’s interior is where it falls short, but it does its job well enough in the other categories.

For example, U.S. News gave the Frontier a 7.6 out of 10 for its performance capabilities, a 7.9 out of 10 for its safety, and a staggering 4.5 out of 5 for its reliability. That high reliability score makes the 2020 Frontier one of the most reliable trucks on the market, and it makes sense since Nissan hasn’t changed much with the Frontier for so long.

Plus, now that Nissan is finally giving the Frontier an overhaul, its interior has received a lot of upgrades too. This year may be the last year that the Frontier gets last place in terms of truck comfort.

How comfortable will the redesigned 2021 model be?

So far, not much is known about the redesigned Frontier. However, spy shots from inside the truck show off a very different Frontier. The steering wheel design has been updated and modernized, and so has the Frontier’s infotainment suite. The 7-inch touchscreen display that’s standard in the 2020 Frontier got an upgrade, and now it looks like it’ll be either eight inches or nine inches in size.

Furthermore, the interior of the redesigned Frontier looks like it’ll be using more comfortable materials, including soft-touch leather. How comfortable that actually is remains to be seen. Regardless, the redesigned Frontier is also clearly getting a lot of additional quality of life features, and Nissan will certainly make it a more comfortable truck than before.

The price tag for the redesigned Frontier is also pretty comfortable for consumers’ bank accounts. It’ll start at about $26,000, which is about the same price tag as the current Frontier.
