7 Dream Cars From the NY Auto Show

What is an auto show if not a brilliant vehicle for escapists? Certainly, the practical rides most people drive are on display at these spectacles, but visitors to the 2014 New York Auto Show are likely out to see the cars that provide fodder for months’ worth of daydreams. This show running April 18 to 27 at Manhattan’s Javits Center doesn’t disappoint.

For starters, the NYIAS marked the arrival of a new hypercar entry on U.S. shores. On another front, one of the most talked about concept cars from Detroit got its East Coast closeup. Forget the electrical vehicles and compact crossovers for a moment and dare to be distracted by pure automotive artistry. Here are seven cars from the 2014 New York Auto Show worthy of sweet dreams.

Flying Spur V8 ES

1. Bentley Flying Spur V8

It may not have the 6.0-liter W12 engine of its more intimidating sibling, but the Bentley Flying Spur V8 is nothing short of stunning in terms of craftsmanship. There’s not much of a power shortage in the V8 model, either, as it packs a twin-turbo capable of 500 horsepower and 488 lb-ft of torque good for a 0-60 sprint in 4.9 seconds.

While the W12 Flying Spur retails at $190,000, dreamers who want to access the sumptous leather seating and wood trim of the V8 will find it at a discount on the market, though Bentley hasn’t offered up a price yet. The automaker did mention the range was extended to allow drivers to tour as much as 500 miles on a single tank of gas. That would be one dreamy afternoon.

Koenigsegg

2. Koenigsegg Agera R

In case New York’s barons didn’t have enough choices on the supercar market, Swedish “hypercar” manfacturer Koenigsegg was good enough to start selling its wares at a Manhattan dealership later in 2014. To alert consumers to what they may access, Koenigsegg brought the blazing Agera R to the Javits Center for its North American debut.

The Koenigsegg Agera R runs on a motor capable of 1,140 horsepower and 885 pounds-feet of torque, which is bound to befuddle state police officers trying to hand out a speeding ticket. Appropriately, this supercar even requires special fuel to produce the maximum horsepower. Unless there’s E85 or E100 biofuel in the tank, the power punch dips to 960 horsepower. The price tag of the Agera R will top $2 million.

Maserati GranTurismo MC

3. Maserati GranTurismo MC Centennial Edition

It turns out Dodge wasn’t the only celebrating 100 years in the automotive business. Maserati crashed the party in New York with the unveiling of the GranTurismo MC Centennial Edition, a speed demon that can fly up to 185 mph. That’s what a 454-horsepower 4.7-liter V8 with eight-speed automatic transmission will do for a car’s punch. This car can turn from dream to reality when it goes on sale alongside the rest of the exquisite Maserati line in July 2014. Pricing will start around $150,000.

Saleen Challenger Black Label

4. Saleen 570 Black Label

Dodge also wasn’t the only automaker sporting a powerful Challenger at the New York Auto Show. Saleen was on hand to showcase the 570 Black Label model that turns the everyday Challenger into a 535-horsepower beast. The Corona, California, specialists describe the base model vehicle as simply a component to use in their supercharging process. In the case of the 570 Black Label, mere mortals can put one in the garage at a starting price of $60,707.

Soleil

5. Soleil Anadi

Italian automaker Soleil came correct to the 2014 NYIAS by positioning its breathtaking Anadi right smack in the middle of the Javits Center’s main gallery. Inside the attractive hood is a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that delivers a max 651 horsepower. In case drivers have no time to spare, you can flash from 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. Top speeds over 200 miles per hour are possible when behind the wheel of the Anadi, so you may need to put the ceramic-drilled Brembo brakes to use in a pinch.

At the moment, New York and Milan are the only places where someone can behold the Anadi, which sells for $299,995 to start. Don’t worry: Soleil is “willing to work with owners to create the best tax structure possible” in countries where these cars become burdens, according to the automaker’s website.

MB S63 AMG

6. Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe

According to the automaker, the S63 AMG 4MATIC Coupe is just “the latest dream car to augment the Mercedes-AMG model range.” In case, the car couldn’t speak for itself, Mercedes had “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm on the scene at the New York Auto Show. The team at Affalterbach went into the woodshed and didn’t come out until it had presented a car that was 140 pounds lighter than the CL63 AMG yet capable of an extra 41 horsepower and 70 pounds-feet of torque.

In sum, the 5.5.-liter biturbo V8 engine has 577 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque on the menu. The 0-60 run takes about 3.9 seconds on the way to a top speed of 185 miles per hour. Mercedes dealers will have the S63 AMG Coupe — a race car for the everyday — in fall 2014. Pricing starts at $139,500.

Elmiraj NY

7. Cadillac Elmiraj

The sweetest 17-foot coupe on Cadillac’s radar held its own among the luxury brands showcased at the 2014 New York Auto Show. In fact, the contrast between the dark blue exterior and camel leather (the color of desert sand) helped the Elmiraj concept car soak in a great deal of the spotlight. Performance automobile lovers are giddy over the prospect of a 500-horsepower Cadillac coupe coming to market, but there’s no telling whether the automaker would fit the Elmiraj with the 4.5-liter twin turbo V8 it currently houses.

Regardless of whether the Elmiraj ever hits showroom floors, it conjures up visions of cruising the Pacific Coast on some epic California afternoon. If concepts are for car lovers’ sweet dreams, the Elmiraj is the stuff many will be made on for years to come.
