After sending over some amazing roadster renderings of the completely bonkers Lamborghini Centenario, the design team over at TopSpeed is at it again, this time with not one but two artist sketches. Both BMW and Audi have been hinting at playing with the two performance-focused machines seen here for a while, and now that we have some solid lines to look at, we have something to safely build rumors around, starting with the RS5.
For Audi, the whole thing got kick-started back in 2007, when it first unleashed the A5 in a hardtop, cabriolet, and four-door “Sportback” body style. Essentially a coupe version of the A4 sedan, the A5 proved to be quite the solid foundation for a performance-oriented vehicle, and as consumer interest took off, the RS5 was born amidst plumes of tire smoke and exhaust noise.
Though production of the vehicle ended in 2015, TopSpeed set out to imagine what a new generation of RS5 could look like with a Cabriolet version leading the AMG/M-series hunting party. While official details have yet to be released, it’s safe to expect an overhauled exterior, new interior tech touches, and a turbocharged V6 that has deeply-rooted anger issues.
It would be safe to assume that the new RS5 Cabriolet will be unveiled shortly after the next-gen RS5 Coupe makes its debut. TopSpeed rendered the former, and supplied us with a speculative review of the car that Audi hasn’t gone public with just yet.
According to TopSpeed, as with the rest of the Audi lineup, the RS5 convertible will draw heavily from the Prologue Concept that debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show back in 2014. Squat and broad-shouldered, with angular headlights that invoke a scowling expression, the Cabriolet sports a forward-leaning stance and a black fabric top for when the weather starts to suck.
Upon closer inspection you’ll see a plethora of RS-specific influences too, starting with a front grille that is all RS5. Sporting a “Singleframe” design, this grille features an aluminum-color that matches the windows, and rocks a glossy-black honeycomb mesh insert. Renderings show that on the sides, large intake ducts run alongside the lower air dam, while signature multi-spoke, 19-inch wheels pull the eye backward toward a dual oval exhaust system that’s nestled comfortably amidst a rear lip spoiler. While less drag remains a key focus, TopSpeed believes that the Cabriolet version will likely focus on making undertray upgrades a major priority.
Meanwhile, the 2 Series has proven its worth for BMW since its introduction to the market back in 2014. Rocking a duo of doors, the 2 Series is essentially the lone wolf in the segment, and with the introduction of tire-devouring M2, the BMW brand has been able to entice buyers by offering an affordable alternative to the M4.
As new niche markets make homes for themselves in today’s automotive arena, BMW is undoubtably pondering adding more variations to its compact range of vehicles. While a fresh reincarnation of the 1 Series sedan has already been confirmed, there are whispers of a Gran Coupe version of the 2 Series like what you see in the renderings here. Simply put, this means that the coupe will receive an extra pair of doors in order to go fisticuffs with cars like the Mercedes-Benz CLA Class and the Audi A3 sedan. So if the 2 Series Gran Coupe ends up getting an M variant to battle the nutty Mercedes-AMG CLA45, you bet your ass there’s going to be a classic German “faustkampf!”
There’s no official word that a 2 Series or M2 Gran Coupe will ever emerge, though TopSpeed argues that “these models would make sense in today’s market.” While some posit that the Gran Coupe could cannibalize sales of the 3 Series, the truth of the matter is that BMW still does not have an answer to Mercedes-Benz’s CLA.
TopSpeed expects the M2 and M2 Gran Coupe to be almost identical from nose to B-pillar in appearance and performance, as emphasized in its renderings. But from there the Gran Coupe will stand out with a longer wheelbase in order to accommodate the rear doors, as well as a slightly longer roof. The latter will be able to descend into the trunk at an angle in order to retain a coupe-like roofline, with a slightly shorter decklid to increase trunk space considerably.
