Car manufacturing is a big business. A big, confusing, business. But a lot of people don’t know which brands own other smaller brands. Are Dodge and Chrysler the same thing? Not really.

Chrysler does not have much of a lineup for 2021, but that could change next year. Dodge has a bit more variety with muscle cars, minivans, and SUVs.

Does Chrysler own Dodge?

Not anymore. Dodge and Chrysler are both owned by the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) group. Chrysler offers more family-oriented vehicles like the Pacifica minivan, while Dodge offers more performance vehicles like the Charger.

According to the History Channel, Back in 1920, both John and Horace Dodge passed away. In 1925, one of the men’s wives sold the Dodge Brothers Company for $146 million. In 1928, Walter Chrysler of the Chrysler Corporation purchased Dodge for $170 million.

Dodge and Ram have very similar stories but are separate brands. When Chrysler restructured back in 2009/2010, the minivans and cars stayed under Chrysler. The trucks went to the Ram brand.

Does Chrysler have reliable cars?

According to Consumer Reports for best brands in 2021, Chrysler actually moved up a bit. The brand moved up 10 spots to the number eight spot. Buick also moved up 10 spots to number nine.

Fiat was the lowest ranking brand back in 2020. Alfa Romeo took that title for 2021. The manufacturer currently offers the 300 sedan, Pacifica, and Voyager for 2021.

Consumer Reports scored the 300 sedan a 78 out of 100. Above all, it received a score of four out of five for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction.

The Pacifica also comes in a hybrid option and starts at around $31,995. The hybrid is a little more at $39,995. It gets 488 miles of gas mileage and 32 miles from the electric battery. In total, Chrysler says that is a total driving range of 520 miles.

The 300 starts at $30,040 and the Voyager is even less at $26,985. Two minivans and a sedan.

What does Dodge offer?

For the 2021 lineup, Dodge has the Charger, Challenger, Durango, Journey, and Grand Caravan. The brand also offers the SRT brand. This includes the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, Charger SRT Hellcat, and Durango SRT.

For this year, Dodge has a wider variety of cars and SUVs than Chrysler does.

As far as the prices, the Charger starts at $29,995 and the Challenger at $28,095. The Charger is sort of comparable to the Charger. The Durango starts at $31,995.

The Journey and Grand Caravan are both under $28,000. The Grand Caravan is a minivan similar to the Pacifica and Voyager.

American brands

Stellantis North America owns Chrysler. It sells vehicles under the Dodge, Jeep, and Ram brands. Along with GM and Ford, Chrysler is considered one of the “big three” manufacturers.

According to CNET, the Dodge Charger, Challenger, and Chrysler 300 are all made in Canada’s same factory. So even though these brands are technically different, the brands are very much intertwined.
