Apple AirTag Leads Couple to Wild Intersection Showdown With Car Thief

Leaving your car running in a parking lot is always a massive gamble, even if you are only stepping away for a few seconds. One local delivery driver recently learned this the hard way, sparking a viral, chaotic confrontation in the middle of a busy intersection that ended with a wildly unlikely arrest.

If you have been on social media lately, you have likely seen the crazy footage of a vehicle violently spinning in circles at the intersection of Teutonia and Capitol Drive. In the video, a man and a woman can be seen literally hanging out of the spinning vehicle, desperately trying to yank the driver out from behind the wheel. Now, the full story behind that unbelievable footage has finally been revealed.

This began when the female victim – who was working as an Instacart driver – left her vehicle running in the parking lot of a nearby Pick ‘n Save grocery store while quickly grabbing an order inside. Within moments, an opportunistic thief slipped into the driver’s seat and took off with the car.

Fortunately, the owner had a secret weapon: an Apple AirTag hidden inside the cabin. She and her boyfriend immediately used her smartphone to ping the vehicle’s location, tracking the stolen ride directly to the busy intersection where they physically intercepted the thief.

During the chaotic scuffle caught on camera, the couple bravely (and dangerously) fought with the suspect while the car spun wildly out of control. While they weren’t able to completely stop the thief from driving away during the initial fight, the victim’s boyfriend managed to pull off an incredible move: he reached into the suspect’s pocket and snatched his physical ID card.

Armed with the thief’s exact identity – revealed to be Lavonte Williams – authorities quickly began their search. Eventually, the suspect turned himself in.

A Hospital Visit and Felony Charges

The very next day, Williams checked into a local hospital seeking medical treatment, but he made a mistake. He was still wearing the exact same clothes from the viral video. A nurse immediately recognized him from the social media clip and alerted the police.

With the physical ID card matching the man in the hospital bed, police moved in. Lavonte Williams is now facing three serious felony charges, including first-degree recklessly endangering safety and driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

According to the criminal complaint, Williams was already out on bond for a retail theft charge from July. He also carries a prior 2022 conviction for battery and threatening a judge. Thankfully, the victims walked away from the fight without any major injuries.
