Alleged Thief Drives Stolen Car to His Own Auto Theft Hearing in California

In a bizarre incident that occurred in California, an alleged car thief, Ricardo Otero, was spotted entering the courthouse parking lot for a vehicle theft hearing by California’s Multi-Agency Detail Combating Auto Theft (MADCAT). However, the police ensured he never made it to the hearing.

The 41-year-old man in Salinas, California, arrived at the Salinas Courthouse parking lot on the morning of March 24 in a car that was allegedly stolen from San Jose.

MADCAT members reportedly spotted Otero driving into the parking lot, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

The police then stopped Otero outside the courtroom and arrested him. He was arrested without incident and was sent to Monterey County Jail.

On top of the case where he faced auto theft charges, he now faces fresh charges of unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle, commission of a felony while released on bail/own recognizance, and driving with a suspended license.

Police Release Statement on Social Media

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office shared a press release on Facebook, which read:

“Subject Arrested After Driving to Court in Stolen Car Where He Was Scheduled to Appear for a Pending Auto Theft Case

“Members of the Multi-Agency Detail Combating Auto Theft (MADCAT) arrested a Soledad man Tuesday morning after observing him arrive at the Salinas Courthouse in a stolen vehicle.

“On March 24, 2026, at approximately 11:00 a.m., MADCAT task force members observed Ricardo Otero, age 41, pull into the Salinas Courthouse parking area driving a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of San Jose. Deputies contacted Otero outside the courtroom where he was scheduled to appear for a pending auto theft case.

“Otero was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Monterey County Jail. He was booked on the following charges:

• California Vehicle Code 10851(a) (Unlawful Driving or Taking of a Vehicle)

• Penal Code 12022 (Commission of a Felony While Released on Bail/Own Recognizance)

• California Vehicle Code 14601.1(a) (Driving With a Suspended License)”
