What a time to be alive! The Porsche 911 has been the flagship model for a long time but recently got bumped by the new all-electric Porsche Taycan. What are some of the trends Porsche sees in its sales figures for 2021 so far?

According to the most recent sales figures released from Porsche, deliveries were up 13% overall. Between January 2021 and September, the luxury automaker delivered 217,198 around the world. Demand was up all over the U.S., but the Taycan saw particularly exciting growth. Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG, said he was thrilled the automaker could deliver many new vehicles.

Von Platen noted that the order books are getting full as the year-end rush hits, but the supply chain issues have impacted the brand.

“However, the coronavirus situation remains dynamic and we are facing challenges in sourcing semiconductors. For these reasons, we are keeping a very close eye on current developments to ensure that we can continue to react in a flexible manner.”

So which vehicles have sold well in 2021 along with the Porsche Taycan? Surprisingly, the Porsche SUVs were big sellers.

How many more vehicles did the Porsche Taycan sell over the Porsche 911?

The Porsche Cayenne was the best-selling vehicle for the year so far, with 62,451 examples delivered. After that, the Porsche Macan sold 61,944 units. That is up 12%. The Porsche Taycan sold 28,640 units, just 668 more than the Porsche 911. The 911 sold 27,972 vehicles, which is still up 10% overall. This is the Taycan’s second year on the market, and it appears to be going strong, up almost 150% from 2020.

Porsche delivered 15,916 718 Cayman and Boxter cars, up around 1% over sales numbers from last year. The Panamera sold 20,275 units which are also up 1%.

The luxury automaker says that the most significant increase in sales was in the U.S., which saw 51,615 units delivered in the first part of 2021. That is a 30% increase over the same period in 2020. These statistics were reflected in the findings from J.D. Power as well. J.D. Power found that Porsche is the most appealing premium brand.

Porsche made a total of 63,025 deliveries in America

The total of 63,025 deliveries across the American continent was up 29% over the first three quarters of 2020. If this trend continues, this will be a record year for the luxury automaker. China is the largest single market for Porsche, which saw the delivery of 69,789 vehicles. Up 11% from last year.

Deliveries in Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East had a 12% increase, taking delivery of 97,841 units. From January to September 2020, Porsche delivered 191,547 overall. So far, in 2021, that number is up 13% to 217,198 units. No matter how you slice it, it seems the Porsche Taycan has been a solid addition to the luxury brand’s lineup. It will be interesting to see how the sales end for the year. Will the 911 be able to pull ahead, or will demand for the Porsche Taycan stay high?
