Since its introduction in the mid-1900s, the Toyota Land Cruiser has been an automotive icon. Although the modern Land Cruiser is focused on luxury, it has not forgotten its rugged roots. And that is why some off-road enthusiasts look to this Toyota SUV to be their off-road rig. One of the most popular Toyota Land Cruiser models is the 80 Series. Launched in 1990, it is a solid mix of premium features and legitimate capability. But, does it have locking differentials?

What is the Toyota FJ80?

The Toyota FJ80 is the Land Cruiser that was sold throughout the 90s. And while this SUV did bring some more luxury to the table, it was still focused on being a  rugged vehicle. Over the years, a variety of changes were made to the 80 Series. For instance, after 1994, Toyota removed its old-school logo in favor of the Toyota logo of today. This makes models built before this fairly sought-after.

As far as North America goes, two engine options were offered. These include the 3F-E 4.0-liter inline six, making 150 horsepower and 214 pound-foot of torque. And then there was also the 1FZ-FE 4.5-liter inline six, which makes 212 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are regarded for their reliability and longevity. It isn’t surprising to see a Land Cruiser from this era with over 300,000 miles.

The 80 Series has locking differentials

Those in the off-road world understand the importance of locking differentials. They help you to get over rugged terrain while maintaining traction. The 80 Series came with a standard center-locking differential, but that’s not all.

Buyers could also opt for front and rear lockers if they wished. And that makes this SUV legitimately capable. Paired with the full-time 4WD, this is a vehicle ready for off-roading or overlanding depending on your preference.

How expensive is an 80 Series Land Cruiser?

In terms of cost, the Toyota SUV does vary quite a bit. According to Hagerty, in 2021, one sold on Bring a Trailer for $141,000. And that certainly is not cheap. Despite that, it is still possible to find an FJ80 with higher mileage for around $20k. The ones pushing six figures are typically in pristine condition and optioned extremely well.

That said, paying $20,000 for an SUV with over 200,000 miles may seem ridiculous to most. But if you understand what the Land Cruiser is, that price is justified. Especially if you want a capable SUV with an old-school feel. And because the Land Cruiser is a Toyota, you should be able to rely on it for many miles. Even if it is over 20 years old.

Since the Land Cruiser is no longer being sold in North America, the prices of these old models will likely go up. Unfortunately, that might keep those on a budget from getting to experience this legend. If you are interested in an 80 Series Land Cruiser, it might be best to act sooner rather than later when it comes to buying.
