8 Things Consumer Reports Loves About the 2022 Ford Maverick

The Ford Maverick is a brand new small pickup truck that’s refreshing to the class of vehicles. It’s safe, affordable, and extremely fuel-efficient for a pickup. Additionally, it’s surprisingly capable of utility despite its size and low price. Here are the eight highlighted things Consumer Reports loves about the 2022 Ford Maverick.

1. Things Consumer Reports loves about the Ford Maverick: Driving position

Many vehicles, especially pickup trucks, can be uncomfortable to drive. Finding the perfect position for your seat, the steering wheel, and still having ideal access to all controls can be difficult. According to Consumer Reports, it’s effortless to manage in the Ford Maverick. The tall, upright seat provides plenty of headroom even for those on the taller side. The door and center console armrest are also well-positioned to keep drivers comfortable on long trips. Finally, even the dead pedal for the driver’s left foot is angled perfectly.

2. Consumer Reports loves the steady and composed ride

If you’re looking for a smaller, smoother riding alternative to a full-size pickup, you’ve found it. CR says that it “stays pretty steady, and the suspension does a good job keeping most of the harsh impacts isolated and away from jarring the driver and passengers.” Moreover, the testers claim that it’s a very livable truck. That’s something that can’t be said about a lot of pickups on the market. Both full-size and midsize options tend to lack a comfortable, smooth ride more often than not.

3. The 2022 Ford Maverick brake pedal feels great

Brakes in the Maverick feel smooth and are easy to apply. According to CR, the similarly put-together Ford Bronco Sport struggled in this area. Consequently, the publication called the Bronco Sport’s brakes grabby and sensitive. It’s a welcomed relief that the Maverick is much better in this area.

4. Excellent handling makes the pickup a treat to drive

While the handling isn’t overly sporty, it’s nimble and responds quickly to steering inputs. Attributes like these are rare in the pickup truck class. CR calls it “head and shoulders above any body-on-frame pickup truck.” However, it has not had a chance to properly test it without ice, snow, or sand on the ground. Most driving is done on a clear road surface, so those tests are yet to come. Moreover, it is a testament to the quality of handling that CR’s reviewers had such good experiences in a less-than-ideal driving environment.

5. Its interior chooses practicality over style

Particularly on the inside of the vehicle, the Maverick is more practical than pretty. Using the basic version of the Sync 3 infotainment system, the Ford Maverick can do everything most people will ever need. It uses functional yet straightforward controls, including physical knobs for easy driving access. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is standard with every model, wirelessly and through a USB cable.

Every control and function is clear, easily discernable from others, and easy to access while behind the wheel. Large, overarching infotainment screens are commonplace in 2022, but sometimes we want the most straightforward option. Choosing to be more practical than having modern styling cues is part of what makes the Maverick so affordable.

6. The 2022 Ford Maverick has an excellent tailgate

Consumer Reports loves the accessible cargo bed of the hybrid pickup.

Firstly, the cables that support the tailgate can be locked into a position depending on the load length it needs to hold. Although the standard bed isn’t wide enough to fit standard 4×8 sheets of plywood, it is made possible by placing them on top of the wheel wells and using ratchet straps. All of this, combined with the optional bed extender available from Ford dealers, makes the Maverick bed larger than it seems. The ability to adjust the tailgate level is an excellent feature we didn’t know we wanted.

7. Things Consumer Reports loves: Bed height and accessability

According to Consumer Reports, it’s easy to load and unload the cargo bed. Because of its height, it’s even easy to reach over the side to grab items. Unsurprisingly, mid-and full-size pickups are more challenging to load and unload, especially from the side. Owners will love the ability to quickly grab things without dropping the tailgate or even needing to climb into the cargo bed. CR noted that most adults of average height or greater won’t need to stand on a tire or bumper to reach inside the bed, either.

8. Consumer Reports loves the visibility

To start, the Ford Maverick has a low, flat dashboard and a wide windshield that provide drivers with high visibility. It has wide windshield pillars, but the side mirrors are small enough that even looking around the pillars is easy at intersections. Next, parking is made easy thanks to a low and flat hood. It can be challenging to see how close the front bumper is to another car or object with some vehicles, especially pickups. CR says the Maverick has the exact opposite experience and can easily navigate forward and park close.

Next, side visibility is also excellent. Without the optional sliding vent rear window, owners get a wide, clear rear window. Nothing is blocking the driver’s view out of the back window other than the rear head restraints. Again, this type of visibility is excellent when attempting to park. Most pickups struggle in this area, but the Ford Maverick excels.
