I don’t shame drivers for being nervous behind the wheel because I’m here to help. Driving at night can be nerve-racking due to reduced visibility. Then fog makes things even more blinding. But it’s getting darker earlier, so it’s time to confidently drive during foggy nights.

5 tips on how to confidently drive at night

The popular internet dad and TikTok user @dadadvicefrombo is back with more excellent advice. This time, he is helping break down five tips to help you confidently drive during foggy conditions at night.

1. The fog line

The white painted line on the side of the road is called the fog line. I didn’t know that, but it’s actually very important and useful to drivers at night.

When you’re in foggy conditions or visibility is low and another car is coming in your direction, look away from the headlights. Move your eyes to the illuminated fog line to stay on the pavement.

    2. Keep things clean

It’s important to keep your windshield, headlights, taillights, and fog lights clean. Removing dirt and other debris will improve your visibility, and it will also help other drivers see you.

You can use any type of headlight cleaner on the lamps. Also, any windshield cleaner is fine. Also, keep your windshield washer fluid topped off with the right cleaning solution. Water can freeze at lower temperatures.

      3. Use your bright lights correctly

When another car is approaching in your direction or you’re following behind another driver, turn your brights off. You can blind other people in traffic from the front and behind.

Using your bright lights in foggy or snowy conditions with less visibility can make the snow and fog brighter. This reduces visibility, so keep the low beams on instead.

        4. Move over

If you see another driver pulled over on the side of the road, do your best to move over and give them space if you can. Also, remember to slow down.

When you’re broken down on the side of the road, waiting for help or trying to change a tire, it’s extremely stressful when cars whizz by. Also, you don’t want to accidentally hit anyone because you can’t see them.

          5. Trucks had SUVs have taller headlights

Owners of trucks and SUVs should remember the impacts that their taller vehicles have on cars. Taller vehicles have higher headlights that can be at eye level to folks in oncoming cars. This may cause it to become harder for them to see you.

What else can drivers do to be safe on foggy nights?

            • According to Michelin Man, it’s a good idea to give your eyes a little time to adjust to the darkness and shadows before taking off behind the wheel.
            • Also, you can tilt your rearview mirror back slightly to reduce the blinding impact of the headlights from the car behind you. Some rearview mirrors have a night mode available that you can switch to.
            • Slow down in general. Visibility is reduced at night, making it difficult to see ahead. For this reason, also refrain from passing other drivers.
            • Leave enough time to react during an emergency situation by increasing your braking distance from the car in front of you.
            • In snowy or wet conditions, observe tire tracks to gauge the depth and condition of the snow or mud.
            • If you need to pull over on the side of the road, pull off as far as possible. Turn off all the lights except for your hazards and take your foot off the brake. This can help stop other drivers from running into you. Never stop on the road.
            • Don’t forget to demist your windshield by using the heater to clear condensation.
            • Plus, it’s always good to check conditions before you drive. Be aware of the weather, traffic, and various routes.

            What do the comments say?

The comments are filled with gratitude as people shared their experiences of being blinded by headlights at night. Some people wish this advice were common sense as well.

Someone said that headlights on new vehicles like the Ford F-150 are illegal. That’s just not true unless some people have installed aftermarket options that aren’t DOT-approved.

One driver shared that the headlights on taller vehicles can be adjusted to point downwards. This potentially provides relief for other drivers.
