I don’t have to tell you that streets, roads, and highways are dangerous places. You’ve got distracted drivers, high speeds, and silly, albeit avoidable, motorist errors. Unfortunately, you’ve also got crazy drivers with angry blood. While road rage is a serious safety issue, you can use these tips to manage a dangerous situation and get home safe.

The roads are packed with crazy drivers, but you can stay ahead of dangerous driving situations with these tips

You’re driving down a busy highway when you see it plain as day: road rage. You spy a crazy driver weaving across lanes of traffic, tailgating, and brake-checking other motorists. It can be a scary situation, especially when you consider the threat of violence in road rage scenarios. Don’t fret, though. Use these tips to fight crazy drivers with good, clean sense.

  1. Keep your distance
  2. Remember and document as much as possible
  3. Don’t respond in kind
  4. Use your favorite techniques to stay calm
  5. Call the authorities

For starters, give a wild child motorist some space. If you’re not the target of their irrational frustrations, this can be pretty easy. Signal, move over, slow down, just get clear of the crazy drivers on public roads. With any luck, their wrath will be short-lived.

Try to remember everything you see, especially in violent cases of road rage. What was the make, model, and color of the vehicle? What was on its license plate? You can use a mnemonic device for those details. Explicit detail is important for the authorities to locate and deal with crazy, dangerous drivers.

Here’s an important rule of thumb: don’t take the bait. So what if they tailgated you? Let it go. No good can come of responding in kind. Tragically, a spiraling event of road rage can take a dangerous situation and make it violent. In that same vein, you can employ your favorite calming techniques. Try listening to your favorite chill-out playlist or a podcast. Use a breathing exercise to stay calm. Remember, you’ll soon be out of your vehicle and miles away from the crazy drivers around you.

Finally, and most importantly, don’t hesitate to call the police. Should you see or be the recipient of a dangerous case of road rage, calling the authorities is the right move. After all, that road rager might not harm you, but that doesn’t mean they won’t harm someone else down the road.
