Usually, when you think of a sports utility vehicle, you picture a family car with plenty of cargo space and cabin room. Speed never comes into play at all, because it’s not needed in this segment of the market. However, many SUVs feature speed and quick acceleration; you just don’t hear about them much.

This may change, though, since more sportscar makers are rolling out SUV versions of the high-powered cars. Some of them even have the same powerful specs as standard cars. Here, we’ll look at a handful of them and see which ones impress with the finest SUV acceleration times.

1. Jaguar F-Pace SVR

With a 3.7-second acceleration, this crossover not only impresses, but it also surprises. SUVs often come with a 3.6L V6 engine, but not the Jaguar. The F-Pace SVR means business with a 5.0L supercharged V8 motor. Add 550 hp to the mix, and we can see how it can grab 3.7 seconds on the road. Standard Pirelli tires won’t add any time to the acceleration, but they seem to do well with vehicle handling at higher speeds.

2. Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

Jeep’s Trackhawk comes in at 3.3 seconds for 0 to 60 acceleration. The Grand Cherokee is certainly no stranger to the SUV market. But, the Trackhawk takes it to a higher performance level. With a 707-hp supercharged V8 motor, the Hellcat engine doesn’t disappoint. Its all-wheel-drive train actually gives it a slight boost.

3. Tesla Model X P90D

Electric car mockers may need to pay attention to this one. Tesla, well-known in the EV circles, brings their electric car to a nice 3.2-second SUV acceleration. Not that long ago people would brush off electric cars, thinking power levels would never compete with the big gas-powered boys. It’s not true anymore. Tesla created a dual-motor combination that blows that theory out of the water.

4. Bentley Bentayga Speed

Known as the world’s fastest SUV, the Bentayga has a top speed of 190 miles per hour. It clocks in with a 3.1-second acceleration time, according to Motor Trends. And Bentley claims a higher amount of 3.8 for 0 to 60 miles per hour. With its weight, you’d assume it would run a bit slower, but the 626-hp W12 engine more than makes up for the added pounds.

5. Lamborghini Urus

Coming in with the fastest SUV acceleration time of 3.0 seconds is the Lamborghini Urus. Its twin-turbo 4.0L V8 engine has an impressive 641 hp. That’s plenty of power, but what’s remarkable about this SUV is the fast steering and high-speed cornering. Also, the carbon-ceramic brakes enable the car to stop quickly without losing control.

SUVs may have become popular for families, but this may shift. Speed is desirable for many drivers, and it’s possible SUVs will turn to speed as a dominant feature in years to come.
